I am glad I am not our AD

I was a big B.J. for coach guy but I realize now that was the 12 year old in me and I was not being realistic. Now that I have had a chance to see a similar situation off in the distance I am very glad that I wasn't doing the hiring because it just screams publicity stunt with nothing to back it up. It may work out for them, but it does not seem like a smart decision.

It might sell some tickets but if any Cyclone fan thinks it's going to be a quick fix they are wrong. Fred id a good guy but learning on the job in a business like college basketball isn't easy.

Hoiberg better win, or he might sink is cyclone legand status...We may be amazed how many people will be putting this guy down if he does not win.

I actually disagree. I think Pollard will get ALL of the blame. They will say things like, "It's not Freddy's fault. He just wasn't ready. It is Pollard's fault because he hired Freddy without even interviewing anyone else."

they could get lucky tho and Fredo could be a hell of a hire- ala Larry Bird for the Pacers a few years back

If anyone can make the leap with little coaching experience, it's Fred. I think he'll hire someone that will help him learn on the job. Based on my past experiences with him, he doesn't seem the type to let his ego get in his way.

I think given the timing of the coaching opening limits the candidates ISU could go after. If this would've happened in Mid-March then ISU would be conducting a national search for a new coach.....I think this is the only way FH is considered to be the head coach for the clones.

I totally agree! Makes me very glad that Iowa did not get what I wanted (BJ as coach). This hire just seems awkward and very rushed. Could have gotten a coach with a lot of experience. Seems like an attempt at a superstar life saver. I wish Fred and ISU the best though. Good basketball in the state is good for the state, as long as Iowa wins when they play! ;)

Except that they supposedly had dozens of head coaches campaigning for the job...yeah, apparently not. You don't hire the Mayor after only 24 hours if you have numerous legitimate candidates as was being reported.

I think Fred Hoiberg had his eye on this job for several years.
It would not surprise me that he met with Pollard a couple of times
over the past 18 months gave him a "power point" on how he would run the program if someday the opportunity
presented itself.

A good employer always is out there interviewing and listening.

Do not think this was 1 day interview and hire, it has been in the works over the last couple of years.

I agree it's been in the works for a while...How patient will the fanbase be with him while he learns and develops as a head coach.

No, he won't. The ISU fanbase will never turn on Hoiberg, just like we never would have turned on Armstrong had the same situation played out in Iowa City.

Thankfully, Iowa is not in that position.

Tolerance will be measured on several things that happen before they play
their first game.

1) Retain all incoming recruits, if he and his staff manage to keep the incoming class together that is a huge plus, especially given how many players annually left the program under Mac.

2) Hire at least 1 assistant with head coaching experience. Eric Musselman anyone? He wants to get into college coaching, so good place for him to start. Gotta have someone

3) Sign a 2 or 3 of good players next fall. (Maybe even a 4 star guy) I think Uthoff is someone that ISU needs to get if simply for the fact he is a psuedo legacy recruit. ISU has a new practice facility to sell and does not have the stigma of a lame duck coach anymore. Need to show he can compete for recruits.

If these things go well, nobody is going to complain to much about a 10 win or less season next year.

Although appealing for obvious reasons, I think ultimately the Hoiberg Armstrong comparison is weak.

1)B.J. Armstrong might be the most famous basketball player of all time but he is not the most popular. He's probably close to the top, but he's not nearly as popular as Hoiberg is in Ames. The big difference is that Hoiberg is not only from Iowa but also from Ames. He was the quarterback of Ames football team. He went on to be one of the best ISU players of all team. The love for Hoiberg runs deeper than for B.J. Armstrong. Did B.J. ever get any votes for mayor?
2) Hoiberg is younger. Lives in the midwest, is from Ames. He could be around for twenty years if successful. B.J. didn't seem like he wanted to stick around that long.
3) Hoiberg is a director of basketball operations. B.J. is an agent. Hoiberg has just been more intimately involved with basketball than B.J. Armstrong over the past few years.

Let's face it the reason that they got Hoiberg and we got McCaffrey is totally a reflection of the different styles of our ADs. If JP was here we probably would have gotten BJ. JP is more of a gut level type person it seems. That was the case with both Chizik and Rhodes. It seems to be working out with Rhoades and was a total failure with Chizik. McDermott was a good smart safe choice and it totally bombed. So was Lickliter. These things are always a gamble.

I hope it works out because I loved Hoiberg as a kid. It's hard to cheer against the guy. Of course, I hope it works out with Fran as well. It would be great to have a basketball rivalry between the two schools that people care about again.

I think BJ's afiilitation with Derrick Rose trumps everything. That being said Hoiberg is either a genius hire or a fire pollard hire, same could be said if we hired BJ. Pollard is trying to save his @$$ from getting fired and hiring a Cyclone legend did just that.

You're giving the average fan way too much credit.

I agree that Fredo is better prepared for the job than BJ would have been.
Most importantly, BJ never wanted the job,and is content with his current high-profile,well paying gig....that is a pretty easy lifestyle.

Freddy wants the job, is an Ames guy, and so I think this makes some sense.
Who knows if it will work, but I am just glad they did not hire Gillespie...he was dangerous to Iowa.
