I am convinced it's not the players

TV showed him flipping out after what should have been a goal tending call. I also remember him getting T'd up once or twice in the past. To say he doesn't care or show emotion isn't fair to him. Especially when it's wrong.

Just because he hasn't been successful at his job doesn't mean he doesn't care.

Wow. We have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores out there with two key guys either injured or suspended and you go off after a win. I just don't get it.

This team will improve this year and will be much better next year. How many wins? I don't know. I do know that Lickliter will be your coach this year and next year, so why not get behind him?
Not to be too picky, but can we really call Archie a "key guy"? Maybe a possible important contributor or something but it's pretty much an unknown.

I would say Archie is a key guy in that his absence means we don't have anyone to match up against athletic big men 6'9" and taller, nor do we have any interior shotblocking presence to help on drives to the basket. Even if he never scores a point, he'd be very helpful to have in the rotation.

Some of you are over reading what I said about Licks demeanor. I thought I was pretty clear when I said- the first 5 minutes of the game. Lick came out and sat on the bench with his chin in the palm of his hands and his elbows on his knees...TO START THE FRICKING GAME!

No enthusiasm, just another day watching Iowa try and play Lick Ball(s).

So just to be clear hawkeye12345, you were at the game on Saturday??? If not, as Spank said earlier, TV really doesn't give you a true indication of what the coaches are doing on the sidelines. I went to the two games down here in KC earlier in the year and I was quite surprised at how in to the game Lick was on the sidelines. And we found out later that he was suffering from severe migraine headaches. These are actions you you don't see on TV. Yes, TV wants to show the few times a coach puts his hands over his eyes, or rests his hand on his chin. But what they don't show is how often Lick yells out encouragement to his players or how he greets every player with a comment or pat on the back as they come off the floor to the bench. I've been there, I've seen it myself!!!

Why are we actually debating/responding to anything in this guys post. Let's examine his premise shall we?

1) I don't know what the system is.
2) It's the systems fault.

Nice work...

I realize he's a tall presence compared to what we have now, but two things: are you sure he'd be a shot blocking presence (a ot of 6'9" players aren't) and if he were that important wouldn't he be playing now instead of redshirting (of course, I'm not sure how his recover has come along so just asking). I tend not to assume things that aren't a fairly sure thing. You might be right, and you don't say that it's a certainty Archie would have a big impact so we might just be disagreeing on the degree.

And I as I said, he had the coat off before the 18 min mark in the first half. So I am not sure on the demeanor you saw.

I am curious, spank. What was the clock malfunction play you mention in your post? Iowa did the play where the inbounding player throws to another player out of bounds. Someone at the scorer's table started the clock erroneously. I still think Iowa got the ball inbounds within 5 seconds. Then, the refs stopped the play because someone noticed the clock started on the 1st pass. Did I miss something? Again, just curious.

I agree with your overall point that the refs calls were not a benefit to either team.

It wasn't the scorer's table, it was the ref who started the clock to early. He started the clock when the Iowa player went out of bounds to do that little pass play out of bounds. If I was DeChelis I would have been ****** as hell because for one, it was close to five seconds and secondly they did a really good job of denying Gatens the ball in that situation. After the clock malfunction Iowa was then able to get Gatens the ball which is basically an automatic two points and they reset the 5 seconds.

It is sometimes embarrassing to hear the crowd booing the refs. Some games it is the only way to know that there are people in the crowd.

Nice work...

Go ahead big shot and take a crack at his 'system'. And I'm not talking about the line of bs that is fed to the media and fans on a regular basis of teamwork, ethics, hard defense and limiting TOs. What f'ing basketball team doesn't have that as a basic principal?

I'm talking about his offensive 'system' that is trying to be run by this team.

He's not running the 1-3-1 offensive set, he's not running the stack offense, he's not running the 3-out, 2-in motion offense. Could it be the dribble drive offense? Nah, not much of that going on. Is it the 5-out open post motion offense? Nope.

So what exactly is the offense that we run smart guy? Because what ever new fangled offense that Lick is trying to teach these kids that takes 2 years to understand absolutely sucks.

Dude this is what you wrote verbatum, it's not like I'm putting words in your mouth...

I am convinced it's not the players
It's the system.

And to be honest with you, I can't even tell you what the "system" is.

And that's my point. I know enough about basketball to know how several 'systems' work but for the life of me I can't figure out what our offense is trying to run, implying that they aren't running a system as we would know it.

All we hear about is the Butler Way....blah, blah
All we hear about is the 'system' takes time to learn.....what system?

Does Lick think he is some genius that is going to come along and change the face of college basketball? Has he invented this new system that will take any joe schmo basketball player that can learn how to chew gum and tie his shoes and turn around and beat bigger, better, faster athletes that are running the 'old' systems?

I am here to tell you that I've watched enough of Iowa basketball for the past 3 years that for the life of me I can't figure out his system and it appears that the players haven't either.

Everybody wants to wait another two years so the current players have the system down and this years recruiting class has a year under their belt. Why? Nothing is guaranteed in sports. Injuries, transfers, academices, off-court, illness....these are all factors that can't always be controlled so why does anyone think that two years from now we are going to be any better than today running this system?

I gotta say the only place I hear people talk about "the Butler way" is on these boards. Could you provide a quote of Lick bringing this up? Seriously I mean I don't read all of his pressers, etc, but one would thing you could give me a quote or two from this year of him referencing this if you are so sick of it.

Can't a guy have his own opinion? He gave corroborative quotes from Kenyon Murray. Many of you "fans" are the definition of fickle. Go on a losing streak and nearly everyone jumps on the Fire Lick bandwagon and trashes "the system." Go on a two game winning streak and nearly everyone trashes the doubter. I think if he posted this before the 'winning streak,' most would have supported him.
