Huskers Hit A New Milestone In Their Journey To Sucktown

I think Hesse was responsible for contain in the Penn State game and McSorley got outside for the score.

Perhaps AJE would have contained him, or chased him down. Our defense, in general, looks more athletic than it has in a long time and we have a nice mix of players to carry out all the assignments.

Hesse definitely didn't have contain, but I am sure he would have liked to play it better:

Hawks were in a heavy alignment (but out of normal personnel) for 3rd and 2. Looks like DL was pinching, Hesse was responsible for B (which he plugged), but he got washed down more than you would like to see. This play was mostly a LB fail. Colbert (who has contain) came too far upfield, opening a huge alley. Hockaday, who was unblocked and has to be the one to make the play, went in the wrong direction. There was a pulling G right in front of him that should have led him to the play, and I don't think he had any man-coverage responsibilities.

Moss, the CB to that side, was in man coverage, got run off, and then got sealed. That certainly could have been played better on his end, but he did have coverage responsibilities first and foremost.

Like most defensive breakdowns, there was plenty of blame to go around.

What will Clone fans do if Wonder Boy loses a 5th in a row ( for him would be 4) and what will Shucker fans do if Hawks win a 4th in a row against Wonder Boy 2 ( for him would be his second) ? And both at their places. That would be glorious. They would have their magic 8 ball excusomatics out in full force.

They're trying to start some shit over there.

Anyone who still uses yards/game (Iowa 2018 rank: 91st) in this day and age proves that they either have an agenda, or they are an idiot.

At the very least, use points/game (Iowa 2018 rank: 39th). Although that in and of itself is very flawed due to different # of possessions across teams. Points per play (Iowa 2018 rank: 34th) or points per possession (Iowa 2018 rank: 22nd) would be better options. If you want to dabble in the various offensive efficiency rankings, they generally have the Hawks 2018 offense somewhere between the high 30's and high 40's in rank.

Or if you consider the fact that Iowa's offensive and defensive strategy are meant to complement each other, perhaps you look at pts/play margin (Iowa 2018 rank: 14th) or team efficiency (Iowa 2018 rank: 12th here, 16th here).

But who knows, maybe Nebraska fans would rather be 20th in the nation in yards/game while being 66th in pts/play and 84th in pts/play margin?

p.s. - No one is saying Iowa lit the world on fire offensively last year, but they were solid on that side of the ball. Also, their record should have been at least 2 wins better with those #s, but alas, situational decision making and execution.

“... but where is their Run Game?”

OMG. He sights 2017 and 2018. In 2017, Iowa came to Nebraska and after the first play of the 4th quarter, never threw another pass. Nothing but running plays and Nebraska knew it was coming. Still couldn’t stop it as our reserves scored twice and the final possession ended in the red zone as time expired.

Where is the run game? “ Slamming it right down Nebraska’s throat.” Btw, 2 freshmen were occupying our OT positions that game.

55 points, IIRC. What a freaking moron.

And sure, the Hawk's running game sucked last year, but how about a team that shut our run game down makes this point, not the team that allowed 266 yards at 6 yds/carry?
Hawkeyes certainly found their running game in time to beat Nebraska. In fact, we ran it down their throats all day. 266 yards is close to the distance, in miles, from Lincoln to Iowa City.

Could you imagine an article like that coming out of Madison, or even Ames? I cannot.
The only numbers I care about related to Iowa and Nebraska are 155 - 72 and 4 - 0. That is our total points vs them as we've kicked their tails four years straight.

Yeah, but I am still upset that it isn't about 225 - 95 and 6-0.

We now know what it takes for Kirk to circle a game:

"We had to evaluate where Iowa is as a program"

Next AD who says that can count on a losing streak coming up. I gotta figure out how to get Wisconsin and NW to say that to the cameras.

Making it way over complicated. Hockaday bit and Gervase was totally out of his head. There's nothing else wrong on the play; everyone else did what they were supposed to. The real hero on this play was Deandre Thompkins (WR3). He played Riley Moss like a fiddle, went outside and got him to turn his back to the play. In fairness Moss didn't have an alternative other than forcing him inside, but Thompkins is just faster.--Moss had no choice. This play would have been instantly blown up by Jewell/Niemann, but that's why they get paid now.

Hockaday selling out was stupid because everyone on that side was matched up one on one after the guard pulled. Penn State's booth had obviously seen it happen several times and dialed up the right play. Gervase...that was a junior high mistake. He picked a guy, ignored the ball, and actually went out to meet the RB away from the ball. Your're taught from day one not to run into a block and he just had a brain fart. Two mental mistakes cost that play, not the failure of the whole defense.

Gervase did what he was supposed to do. He was the contain defender on that side (same role as Colbert on the top), and he had a man-assignment on the back. He came upfield and maintained outside leverage (did not over-commit to the outside as much as Colbert, so played it a bit smarter). He did exactly what he was supposed to do.

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one. He bit right from the snap and got tunnel vision on the RB, and completely ignored the ball. He and Hockaday both diving like that left a 20YD black hole in the secondary that no D-1 DC is going to draw up. Happens constantly in lower level football.

You can see the exact moment he snaps out of it. Gives the RB a love tap and realizes he just had an oh shit moment.

I’m not down on Gervase, he just bit on a well-designed play. The reason I liked him way more at S than 37 was because Snyder didn’t have the eyes or the head for coverage like Gervase did. Snyder was one dimensional and that dimension was full speed, head down, and hope you don’t miss. Works at West Lyon playing against high schoolers but not in P5.

With all due respect, I don't think you have any idea about his responsibilities on this play. It is pretty clear that he is the contain/force defender to the D's left. He bit on nothing, he came across the line of scrimmage and made immediate contact with the blocker because that was his job. He needs to squeeze the inside gap by controlling his man while maintaining outside leverage.

What did you expect him to do in this case? How often do you expect the outside force player on the backside of a play to be the key defender in stopping the run away? He could have played hero ball and gone under the blocker to try to make a big play, but that would have opened up the scramble to his side if it was a pass.

Everyone on the D has a gap, and he controlled his (as did everyone else). From the D's standpoint, things really could not have been designed any better; Iowa sold out to stop run, and PSU ran. Iowa had an unblocked MLB who should have had a fairly straightforward scrape to the play, and somehow his eyes got locked in on something else. Hesse and Colbert could have played through their blocks better on the play-side to shrink the hole, but it would not have mattered with a good read by MLB.

If you want a great example of what Gervase was supposed to do on this play, think of the first half 4th and short vs. Wyoming in 2017 when he played the same role, took on contact with his inside arm, and then dropped the ball carrier for a loss when he tried to bounce outside (sorry, can't find a video). Gervase played this exactly the same, but the ball happened to go away.

I would have gone the "agree to disagree" route, but you can't just wrongly (but with utmost confidence) accuse someone of making a "junior high mistake" when that clearly is not the case.

Came for the Fusker mockery and a coach-off breaks out.
Well I shit you not, I found this, this morning.
Either we finally got through to one of them, or we can now say not all husker fans are delusional aholes.

"I know there's a lot of people that would disagree with me. Those are the very same people I was talking about on forums and message boards acting like it's the 90's and like Nebraska is still king of the mountain. Talking down to Iowa fans and fans of other teams like we're somehow better. It's embarrassing.

Nebraska is a more iconic program than Iowa, yes. We have more national championships and more wins all time. But what does that have to do with right now while they're handing us our a** every year? They don't care about any of that. Wisconsin doesn't care. Northwestern doesn't care. Purdue doesn't care. Nobody cares except us because we're desperately trying to hold onto some semblance of relevancy.

To quote a line from Moneyball, "we sit around here talking the same old "good body" nonsense like we're selling jeans".

Until we start winning, it's all just talk."
