Since some of us are in its path I thought I'd carve out a slice for this topic. Have any of you been through a hurricane?

I have been through too many to count. I am inland, near Orlando, an hour from East Coast Florida and two hours from West Coast Florida. Last year Irma, much like Charley in 2004, came up the middle of the state and put a hurtin' on us.

Being in a 24-hour call center, I have had to learn the ins/outs of hurricane preps/survival. Let me know if you need info/tips/hacks, etc. Where (approximately) are you located?

NCHawker Is in Greensborah, NC. Still looking like they are fixin' to get absolutely dumped on. My area is looking like we are on the super duper periphery, for now anyway.

No I have not but it is amazing what power they have. If you think about them and discount all the destruction they cause it is amazing how they start as a small low pressure area then just start building with warm moist air climbing from the ocean upwards. They are amazing to see from high altitude and just huge.

Be safe everyone. Bad snow and rain thunderstorms with tornadoes are bad enough let alone to get pounded for a couple of days.

Even in DM, one should have an emergency kit with boxes of Duracell Procell batteries, boxes of wooden matches, combination windup, solar powered lights and radios with USB connections. USB charging devices that also have an LCD light and will charge several phones, laptops, etc.....

Insect repellent and propane camp stoves with many propane bottles which are usually on sale at Summer's end at Target, Walmart etc.....

Water, of course, and minute rice, protein bars, etc.....

And lemons and limes to prevent scurvy.....

Amazon is proficient and reliable with their free 2 day delivery that I wouldn't be surprised to have them deliver supplies by drone to the survivors of Florance's wrath.....

This Hurricane is no joke. People should already be at least 250 miles away. I imagine it would be quite difficult to find lodging at this stage of the game.....

They aught to have a device that you can hook to your car or battery that turns your car into a electric A/C generator. Any of you EE guys want comment on the feasibility of that? Just run the cable into your house and plug in a power strip.

FML. This thing took a bad turn for me overnight. I'm about 30 miles from the tropical depression. My aunt and uncle live on that lake right where the circle around the "D" connects with the black line drawn up to 2AM Monday and the nuclear power plant that powers the entirety of northern South Carolina is right there. Columbia is gonna get absolutely shit on. The lines for gas are insane and Costco went from running out to "out" of a lot of things yesterday.

I have a 110 plug in my Explorer, but I don't know if I should run two box fans and my electric griddle off of it via extension cord and power strip. Any advice?

Why the hell are people buying milk? If the power goes out that milk is only gonna make it a day or two at most. I am set for up to 5 days without power because my cooler will hold ice for about 7 days but I ain't wasting space in there on a gallon of milk. Buy the powdered stuff, people.

I often wondered the same thing. Why the run on milk? Who the hell even drinks milk in any quantity as an adult?

There's talk of bottled water getting shipped in by the truck loads from all over. Be ready to hear about all the 3rd party contracts with the government profiting off of it... Never let a good tragedy go to waste as they say..

After living through the Flood of '93 in Neck Moines, I gotta say that even with the grift, this is a good idea. It's still hot as balls in much of the South, too.
