Howe: Things Go According to Plan for Hawkeyes at Northwestern

A big part of football is realizing the team's strengths and then playing to them. It's actually that way in most sports, but especially in football, when you can lean heavily on one aspect like defense.
Yes, I just don't see us running up huge offensive numbers. It's not that we aren't capable, its just the defense is that good.

By that reasoning you must be saying that we should have killed Michigan.

I get what you’re saying, but that kind of comparison rarely plays out in college football.

Weirdly, without the turnovers and letting free rushers give Stanley 2 seconds, we probably don't kill Mich, but having rewatched it, we likely should have won with some cushion..... even just kicking fgs the 6 times we were inside their 40.

Ifs and buts though...

That game, more than PSU, still pisses me off.

I think it's relative to the strength of the opposing defense. NW's D is decent, and it showed that early. The odds of having a big day against it were considerably lower than Iowa's D dominating NW's O, which happened.

Could Iowa have taken more shots offensively and still won? Probably. But there was no need. NW wasn't going to do anything against the Hawkeye D.
