Howe: Sad to See the End of Iowa Playing Drake, UNI

I understand that view; I don’t think it’s correct. Playing Drake/UNI on a neutral floor when their rankings are well above the sub-250 ranked teams that Fran schedules at Carver is absolutely an upside. I don’t see how that can be argued.

Put aside that entire situation, right or wrong, that is not why Barta said the series was cancelled. He said it was cancelled so his program can win championships.

Anyone buying that reasoning? Anyone?

I agree with you. Not buying it.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the bigger picture but hasn't Iowa and Iowa State openly offered playing both MVC programs annually on their home floors just not on the road? Maybe they haven't since before the Hy-Vee Classic came about but I'm pretty certain that was the case years back before they came up with the Des Moines games solution.

If that's still the case, I have a feeling they'll be back on the schedule eventually. With the bulk of both UNI and Drake normally filled with Iowa athletes that were not offered by the bigger schools, they'll want to take it to them on the Big Ten/12 floors. The UNI and Drake ADs will eventually cave once they realize they won't get the bigger boys back in their gyms but playing at the big boys gyms is great marketing for their programs and a chance to play on national television... well the BTN anyways. :)
I went to UNI for a while and that dome gave us quite an advantage in shooting, guys like Nurse and Newby always shot well, opponents usually struggled. Haven't been to UNIs new stadium hear it's a nice stadium. I for one would like a 2 for one 1 home and home with UNI and Drake, staggering the away game on opposite years from each other. A lot of Iowa fans in those areas would get to see the Hawks play. Better than some of the teams they drag in now. If not every year that stagger them every other year.

OK, I'll play. What does being on the fire Barta wagon entail? What are the minimum requirements to board? I have to admit, your vocabulary is impressive. Bumassery.
i listed three in #45. obviously the requirements are subjective. others have said he should be fire long ago for different reasons.

mine were an accumulation of barta unveiling his integrity bankruptcy.
i don't countenance deceivers, liars, cowards very well -- especially those in positions of leadership.

(still vocabularlily impressed?)
;)

Do you think it's still 1992? There is now way ISU would agree to that nor should they. Plus, I'd point out that playing Iowa isn't the financial windfall you make it out to be.

Nope.....it is 2018 and I say drop the dead weight. Iowa St needs us more than we need them. Yes, you are a bit better, but we don't need you....but I would be willing to throw you bone every few years at our place. I would rather play a more marquee opponent. Sorry, but a lot of Iowa fans feel this way. Some don't, but I'm in the other camp. And If I was the AD, that would be my terms. Take it or leave it. And, if they didn't accept, so be it....I don't care. I will find a better opponent to play for our program and recruiting purposes. I'm not in the business to help Iowa St, I'm in the business to advance the Iowa program on a National basis.

In what way do you mean "smaller school"? Enrollment? UNI's enrollment this fall was 11,212. (Iowa's is 24,503) Just to be clear, here are some enrollment figures for the current year for a few well-known P5 schools: Duke 6,692; Northwestern 8.278; Stanford 7,062; TCU 9,445; Vanderbilt 6,885; Notre Dame 8,576. These schools are smaller than Iowa or UNI in enrollment, but arguably are all as large or larger than the University of Iowa in national recognition.

Before we say "smaller school" we have to determine what it is we are talking about.

11k to 25k seems like a "smaller school" - The Valley vs the B1G seems smaller in scale as well. I don't know what you're arguing?

I don't know why he decided to bring it up but he's saying there are schools in the bigger conferences that are smaller in terms of enrollment when comparing those numbers to UNI... That's obviously never the intent when people say "smaller" schools when talking about collegiate sports. They are not in the same stratosphere when talking about national recognition in sports and the budget of athletic programs even though UNI's enrollment may be bigger. So yeah, I'm not sure what he's arguing lol.

I don't get the outrage over not playing UNI and Drake? I personally don't give a shit at all. Being forced to play one of these schools every year on a neutral court is just an unnecessary hassle.

If UNI or Drake wanted to come to Iowa City every once in awhile, sure lets do it. But to have a mandatory game in Des Moines every year for the "good of basketball in the state of Iowa"? Consider me a huge "meh".
Agree.
