That was horrendous. Trick plays are a calculated risk IMO but that was just a terrible time to try it. Punt, pin em deep, and take the lead into the locker room.
Kinda like the fake punt deep in our own territory last year against OSU that gave them a free touchdown. Granted we were up 30 so it didn't really matter much but still - I question the timing on some of these.
That fake punt was the punter's decision. He had a wide open field in front of him with pretty much 100% chance of making it since they only had one guy anywhere close to him with 3 of our guys to block him. The problem is those 3 guys didn't know he was going to run so they ran right by the guy instead of blocking him. In fact, one of our guys even side stepped out of his way allowing him to make the tackle.
As far as the trick play today goes, that's like the 4th or 5th one we've ran and it's the first one that didn't work so I'm not going to complain. I disagree that it was a bad time to call it because even if we don't pick it up, there's still a really good chance Penn State doesn't score. Turns out we didn't get it and they did score. Hindsight.
