Howe: Hawkeyes Heading in Wrong Direction

Can we put to rest the myth that Iowa gets better as the season progresses? Also for a 'developmental' program with a coach in his 19th year, which is an excuse for sucking, we sure aren't developing anymore. This entire staff needs to go, period.
But but, the buyout will cost too much... Then spends $90 million on north endzone remodel....

You know this - the reason Iowa raised $90M for the N EZ renovation is because the people with the big money support the head coach.

That 12-0 season was CJB. If he transferred and JR stayed, we'd probably have 7 or 8 wins.
That is something I've rarely seen mentioned. Your totally right. CJ made big time plays throughout that season that JR couldn't/wouldn't have made. Period. They played a lot of close one possession games that year and although I think JR could have gotten 7 to 9 wins with that team he wouldn't have done what CJ did.

Very true but to what end? Opinions can shift quite quickly. Especially in the world of college football. If Iowa loses out to Nebraska and whatever bowl they end up in and look as poor as they have the last two weeks it could be a cold long winter/off season.

Iowa took another step back with Saturday's loss to Purdue. HN Columnist Rob Howe tries making sense of the Hawkeyes confounding season:

My critcism of the article is that it sounds like a 1 year thing. Its not. Even in 15 the signs were there. Its been a thing since about 09 when it started basically.

All depends on how you look at it and your expectations. And the column wasn't meant to be a retrospective on any selected period of time in the KF Era. I was writing about this season.

I don't have an answer for you. I will say that many of these people are friends with KF. How quickly do you turn on your friends?

Did anyone ask why we took the ball first after winning the coin toss? Going 3 and out and punting the ball felt like it set the tone for the whole game.

I'm not saying they will or even that they should. I'm just pointing out the what if scenario. Look at how much things have changed in less then a months time. Iowa has gone from looking like they can run with the big boys to being beatable at home no less by pretty much any team with a pulse. What other programs have had that? Putting up almost 500 yards of offense against OSU to less then 100 against Wisconsin. With no drastic personal moves/injuries etc.

I felt Brian went into the Purdue game with a plan that they'd just run all over them. Even down two scores they weren't in a hurry to try and score they kept running it on 1st and 2nd downs. Serious question. There were several plays where Purdue showed a 8-9 man in the box front. On the plays it looked as though Stanley was checking they still ended up running it into the front for next to nothing a lot. Does he not have the ability to check to a pass and if not why the heck not? It's like they forgot how they were successful against OSU.

No, I hear you. There's no making sense of the change in two weeks. Purdue lost to Rutgers. Its two other B1G wins this season were at home against Minnesota and pitiful Illinois. There's no excuse for what happened yesterday.

Ultimately, it comes down to coaching. They recruit and train the players and get paid to do their job. They failed the last two weeks. The other teams were more prepared.

Can we also put to rest the myth that Iowa is a physical program? How many times does Iowa need to get pushed around by the likes of Purdue, Minnesota, NDSU, ISU, etc before KF comes to grips with this.

Frankly that what if scenario of losing out and looking bad doing it scares the crap out of me... At this point it seems to be more likely of a thing to happen then winning out and salvaging some sort of happyish ending to the season. I just can't see those with the big pocket books being all that happy about that sort of an ending either and I'm not sure what the end result would be but from the fans side it'd be pretty bad.

I think the easiest most fixable thing that would help the O turn around is just the receivers catching the darn ball. I'd love to know a break down of how many passes have been dropped and possibly how many yards were left on the table. (not to mention first downs that would have continued drives) Drops especially on 3rd downs just kill us and are next to impossible to overcome. Granted the wind had yesterdays game being played as almost a 2 Q game offensively which just magnified the importance of executing when you had to..

Penalties have been an issue, too. They, along with the dropped passes, have been drive killers. And Iowa has a thin margin for error as a result of conservative play calling.

Time to follow the HF last couple of years of emptying the cupboard and making sure that this program is s**t and years to rebuild after the KF abortion is complete!

We will see how much they like it when season tickets sales head south for the next year. Students have already lost interest amd from reading twitter and following multiple message boards, the fans have had it too. Iowa football is digging itself a multi-year grave right now.

The conservative play calling/conservative offense is responsible for why we can't recruit good WR talent. It's funny to me that as long as KF has been in the game of coaching football, he can't see what's right under his nose.
Or maybe he can and he's willing to live on the razor thin margin. I have to admit, that it's worked out well for him, financially.

They’ve already sold most of the spots in the new North End Zone big money boxes and the high priced press box areas. The folks in the stands might drop off some but the big money still is coming in.

Serious question -- if there are 5-10k empty seats each game do you think that has an impact?
