Howe: Five Ways to Pass the Time without Hawkeye Football this Fall

Ahhh, Top Gun.

Brings back mixed emotions for me.

Growing up, my goal was to go to the Naval Academy and become a fighter pilot. My room was chock full of posters and models of various fighter aircraft. I was really living and breathing it (I still keep my eye on developments in the field).

When I was 17 I lost my 20:20 vision and was told by the academy that I wouldn't be able to pursue the pilot track (I think that rule has since changed), so I gave up on my dream. They pushed navigator, but that was a non-starter. Shortly after that, Top Gun came out. I refused to see it for 7 years or so, but I've seen it 5 or 6 times since then. Still a little melancholy for me.

Indiana Jones movies were great. I am pretty sure I have those on VHS as well somewhere.

We had HBO when I was a kid and my dad would record tons of movies so we didn't have to buy them, lol. Things sure have changed since then.

Back in the 80s when I was a kid there weren't any add-on channels or any shit like that. You either had cable or you didn't. I remember there were like 20 channels and we had both Showtime and HBO. It was probably $12 a month or something crazy like that. VCR was a top-loader with no remote. As in it didn't come with a remote when it was brand new.
My parents were the same, I had a copy of Naked Gun that was on TV where my favorite scene "maybe this will help refresh your memory" was actually twice as long as the actual movie release. Can't find the extended clip anywhere.

Left out:
You're no better than your old man.
My old man's dead.
I'm sorry Johnny I forgot.
Maybe this will help refresh your memory.
Oh yeah he is dead.
Where were we?
Maybe this will help.

Um, I think that basically describes every single male in the United States for probably 4 years after Top Gun came out.
Probably true. Pop culture.

I would guess applications to the CIA went up dramatically too in the 60s after the Bond movies came out.

Nielsen was a fucking genius

One of my all-time favorite comedy movies. I've seen it probably 20 times and still laugh out loud every time.

In college me and some buddies would get baked and watch it for about 3 months straight - fair to say I've seen it well over 100 times :)
I did that with Airplane!, which is still my favorite. I've easily seen it 80-100 times and never tire of it.

There are just some needed staples in life, and watching the comedy classics is one of them.

Airplane! and Naked Gun are absolute requisites. Others I would throw out there would be Holy Grail, Blazing Saddles, Christmas Vacation, Animal House, Caddyshack, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary.

I also have a real soft spot for a few of the Peter Seller's Pink Panther movies - Return of the Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, and Revenge of the Pink Panther. The first few of the series were just so-so, but those three are timeless and simply hilarious.

Airplane is a top 5 funniest movie of all time

Kareem ended up in two of the funniest scenes in the movie, this one and the one where his cover is blown by Joey.

I'd put Animal House in the top five as well. Fun fact. That movie was originally intended for a roster of SNL characters. Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, etc. The only SNL who actually ended up doing the movie was John Belushi.

I'd say that one of my favorite comedies of all time is Almost Heroes, one of Chris Farley's movies that was under the radar, but I think it was his best

Great movie. It’s a sleeper that most people haven’t heard of, similar to Beverly Hills Ninja.

My favorite scene from Almost Heroes...

What kills me is those are some of the funniest movies of all time, yet if they made today you'd probably find absolutely no companies willing to produce them because a large portion of what made them comedy gold is now considered "offensive" and not PC. I miss the days of entertainment where nothing was considered off limits. Seriously what comedies now are even close to being on par with movies from 80s- early 2000's?
