Howe: Five Ways to Pass the Time without Hawkeye Football this Fall

I have Army vs Mid Tenn ST on for a couple of minutes to see what it is like and the stands are very empty on one side, cadets are socially distancing and many have masks on.

It aint the hawks and I am turning this game off , just wanted to peek in, but there might, might be better games on later in the year.

The Iowa Basbeball Confederacy by Kinsella has tons of Iowa City references.

Watch Cobra Kai and Teenage Bounty Hunters, both on Netflix.

Season 2 of The Boys dropped on Prime.

Instead of watching bad football (ISU), I'll be watching good football in the SEC. Must have fall football.

I will be dutifully following Clay Travis and listening to everything he has to say on every form of social media.

Cobra Kai is a fantastic show. Can't wait for season 3

Some book recommendations to add to your list:

Boxing genre: The Last Great Fight - chronicles the Tyson/Douglas fight in Tokyo

Apocalypse: The Passage, The Twelve, & City of Mirrors - great 3 part series, all the trash FOX puts out there and they cancelled the Passage after 1 season???

Also the Omega Days series is very good series in this genre, 6 books

Crime: The Cartel, Power of the Dog, & The Border - fantastic series from Don Winslow, The Force is another good book from him.

Supernatural Horror: Ghost Road Blues - just started this series

Spy: I am Pilgrim

Military: Lone Survivor - the movie was solid but did not due justice to the book

The guy who plays Johnny Lawrence is an absolutely ridiculously good actor. He completely crushes everyone on that show. That guy got typecasted as the mean prep in the '80's and was in that role in a bunch of movies.

Add another - use the $$ you saved from not buying football tickets to get a nice telescope. Jupiter and Saturn look great and Mars is now coming up at a reasonable hour, so there are excellent opportunities for astronomy.

Hey Rob, I too read "The Great Gamble" - excellent work by Bluder. The characters and many twists and turns in the story helped to keep me interested through out.the entire book. Although not as intense as Grisham's writings, Bluder's work reminded me of Grisham's style and attention to detail. ;Keeping U of I and Hawkeye related things central to the theme of the book is another plus from my personal point of view. Can't help but wonder how folks from other parts of the country relate to that particular aspect of the story. Any body interested in big time collegiate athletics should enjoy this book.. .

I'll probably write a review after I finish up. He does a good job with character development. That's a key for me.

I've seen KK1 a lot. I tried watching the remake with my kids. It didn't do it for me.

You need 50 hours of diversity, inclusion, sensitivity and unconscious bias training if you didn't think the remake was better than the original. Same with Annie. Same with the Ghostbusters remake.

This hooked me ... :)

The nostalgia for me was off the charts.

Pretty sure the new Top Gun won’t have that same effect.

My 3 favorite movies growing up were Top Gun, Karate Kid, and Back To The Future. Totally confident I could write all three scripts from memory with a >95% accuracy rate.

Great list--not sure which one wouldn't crack my top three but I couldn't have a top 3 80s movie list without the Goonies being #1 followed by Back to the Future at a close #2. Top Gun and Karate Kid would definitely be in the mix for my top 5.
