Howe column

Tool? Well you are a fool. A fool for walking in lockstep with Bowlsby and now Barta, and putting up with mediocre coaching and recruiting efforts year after year after year. I guess you are one of those Iowans just happy to cheer on "your boys" no matter what the product is....I honestly hope you were not fooled by the last football season.....because more of 2014 is right around the corner when the schedule gets tougher.

No one likes to lose, so you take the good w/the bad....and yes, we're on a slide, maybe it's a kiddie slide, but a slide nonetheless....Are you one of those that have to win at all costs? We all should take losses with a little dignity, knowing that we can do better, and try a little harder the next time. There are a lot of threads regarding players? Regarding coaches? No hone has the f*cking answers so you go out and play, play hard, and play to win....if you don't you move on and try and improve on the next one....I've been critical at times, but reality brings me back and suggests these kids are doing the best they can, and so are the coaches......Jesus, back the f*ck up and relax, enjoy what we've done so far, and hope for the best.....Is this why some people die at an early age? From heart attacks? From stress? Keep cheering boys and girls, b/c it will turn around, and I hope that those that are ******** about everything all the time will become proven wrong.....

What a miserable existence this must be.

If we win Saturday we will have back to back 12 win conference seasons. I understand it's human nature to always want a little better than you have. But we were having 10 win seasons 6 years ago. Most people take a little time to be unhappy about something that is such an upgrade over what it recently was. It will take a few more good seasons in a row for me to start getting mad that we aren't having great seasons.

he complains about everything. i agree about miserable.

@SpecialHawk, thanks for sharing your end game experience. I'm not sure this heavy-hearted Hawk fan could have done the same although, OTOH, I wouldn't be doing anything stupid like booing them either.

Thanks sscK. For me and a few others it's about trying to give the guys something positive in the midst of all the negativity. They are in a slide that we all are not sure they can come out of. The fact is they have now lost their confidence as a team expecting bad things to happen instead of good. What's the point of piling on? I fail to see how this is going to help.

I am no more thrilled than anyone else that this happening but I do want to keep some perspective. These are first class, intelligent, hard working kids. They know what was on the line so it's no like they just decided collectivity to throw it away. My only hope is they can take these last opportunities to get it going again so why not give them some positive support?

As stated before by others these guys have won 23 league games in a 2 year span which is the most since Mr. Davis's first 2 seasons. That's a freaking long time ago and what was done with Raveling's recruits.

The great conference start and big wins got us some national publicity which only adds to our good will bank account when recruiting.

We won at MSU and beat them twice and the one at Breslin is something I was not sure I would ever see.

There are still a lot of positives about this program going forward to continue to build on. There is no reason to think we cannot get back to this point in the next couple of seasons. We do have some problems to solve like late game finishes but to me these are good problems because if we solve them we will be even more successful. That's a far cry from where we were before. I just do not understand why some of our fans want to give up whenever we hit adversity instead of taking a 'break the rock' mentality. Just be relentless as a program!

No Rob....it's only that just once I'd like to see and Iowa sportswriter offer up some criticism by not talking in the 3rd person through "the fans". And there is a lot to be criticizing right now about Fran, but nobody is doing it except "the fans".....especially given his 13-30 record in games decided by 5 or less. So which is it....is every fans who criticizes way off base, or are the sports writers in Iowa too scared to offer up any personal opinions? And BTW, I'd call the last three (3) weeks of Iowa Basketball miserable something!

Not every fan, just you...just you.

I was referring to this comment: Well you are a fool. A fool for walking in lockstep with Bowlsby and now Barta, and putting up with mediocre coaching and recruiting efforts year after year after year. One would think by this comment that Iowa is Purdue in football and Rutgers in basketball. If you can't take some joy out of the 2015 football and '15-16 basketball seasons around here, yes, I believe that is a miserable existence.

And this statement it's only that just once I'd like to see and Iowa sportswriter offer up some criticism by not talking in the 3rd person through "the fans" is just factually incorrect. Not every story written by every reporter is a third-person criticism of the fans. In fact, the piece you're referencing isn't that. It's one of two graphs you chose to pull out and complain about. And, if you're irritated by what you perceive as reporters insulting you for your over-the-top, chicken little views about a basketball program that's about to reach the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row for the first time since '91-93, you might want to reassess things.

I'm usually p***** for an hour or two after a loss because I'm a huge fan and I'm human. I get frustrated because Uthoff can't seem to make a shot any more, Woodbury fumbles a ball out of bounds, or Gesell gets his stuff rejected at the rim often. But after that hour or two goes by I remember it's just a game and not life, that the players have given it their all, and that I'm still a loyal Hawkeye fan. Then I reload my emotions and get ready for the next game and hope for the best.

-------Not every story written by every reporter is a third-person criticism of the fans.

When a story is not written with 3rd person opinions, you can bet that there is no criticism at all in the story.

In fact, the piece you're referencing isn't that.

You better read it again....you did what I spoke of three (3) times. Look, I like you and your work....just glad Harty is gone, and never want to see his gutless style of writing again. Especially on a great website like this one!

If you are p******, fire away as Rob Howe....not fans that are grumbling about blah, blah, blah.....that is a cop out that I exposed years ago in regard to Iowa Sportswriters in general.

Fine. You can paint me as whatever you want. I don't have patience for fans that act like chicken little and can't enjoy success unless it's a national championship.

As I said, you've revealed yourself as having what I believe is a miserable existence as a fan. But, that's your choice and says more about you than it does the other folks on here with which you argue because they're not turning on their team and anticipating the worst.

One can be critical as long as there's perspective. And if there are fans going overboard without perspective, you can bet your arse I'll point it out in columns whether you like it or not. If you want to get on message boards and social media and rip college kids anonymously, you're fair game and pointing out the pulse of a segment of the fan base is part of the story surrounding a team.

You seem insecure and sensative with regards to your opinion. If you think Fran and the team sucks and an abomination, own it and don't call out a writer for pointing it out.

I'm done with this discussion. I'll give you the last word. You've not convinced me I was in the wrong and won't. You missed the point of my column because, again, you're focused on me intertwining overboard fans into the piece. I can't do anything about that. Later.

Playmaker does tend to be over the top about most things...

However I do agree with part of his sentiment here.

A "Fair Weather" fan complains about a 4 game losing streak? say what?

In all honestly fans that b**** at other fans for b****ing.. its just another way of venting.

It's always transparent.

So many fans are overemotional and don't understand the sport they are watching that well so they get frustrated and don't know how to express their frustration through anything but hyperbolic nonsense like " let's fire everyone all the time!" Its tedious and boring and not frequently a good solution.

98% of the posts I saw during the losing streak said nothing about firing anyone.. there were some over the top posts and threads for sure.

I'm just saying - there are always some "heartfelt" posts calling out fan for being bad fans.

Such posts are just different forms of venting frustration- trying to find out someone to yell at at.

I only saw a small percentage of people being overly negative. Most of what I saw was rational.

Um...ok. Who asked you to respond? But I did unintentionally did draw you off sides, so it's 1st down and 5 yards to go for me.

I never said the team sucks....but I do think that both Fran and KF are severely overrated and deserve short leashes. I own everything.....the only thing that I called you out for was the crutch of only criticizing in the 3rd person.

Fans are supposed to be emotional...that's what it is. Fan...is short for fanatic.

The overreacting and instant fatalism..yeah, that's sometimes a bit much...yet honest criticism is legit. (don't confuse an observation with a judgement).

But emotional is something we could use more of in CHA
