Howe Column: Hawkeyes Snag Necessary Win in What Has Become a Heated Rivalry

I'm pretty sure ClintonIAfan is an algorithmic bot created by the UofI athletic department.
I think he's Smiley, the legendary Iowa City rube who worked in Currier food service and was known for his buttons and photos, as well as his love for women's sports.

Smiley was originally from the Clinton/Maquoketa area, had a birth complication that left him slightly mentally challenged, and may have gone back to be near family after retirement.

I don't know how Smiley would get to Carver on a regular basis but he was legendary for hitchhiking from Iowa City to Des Moines for the girls high school state basketball tournament.

With all due respect, Iowa needed a last second field goal to beat a team that started 0-6 and won four games. And it was at Kinnick Stadium.

Adrian Martinez is going to be a problem for defenses in this league. I wouldn't get too comfortable.

^This.

Nice to get the win of course but don't get carried away here. Needed a last second field goal to beat a 4 win team at home. More a feeling of relief than exhilaration for me. Nebraska is going to be pretty tough next year.

Iowa still hasn't won a Big Ten title since 2004.

Are you just guessing here or do you know this to be the case?

I mean this in the most respectful way possible. I've been thinking that there is some type of mental issue going on there. That's why I've been taking it easy on him/her lately.

I think you may be on to something here. Either that, or they are extremely committed to the craft, but I dont think that's the case.

It's a guess. I haven't talked to Smiley in 25 years. Obviously I could be completely wrong.

Smiley has (had) an absolute heart of gold. And he loves (loved) his Hawkeyes, especially women's sports.

If you're questioning him being slightly mentally challenged, that is true from a birth complication. Among other things, I don't think he could legally drive a vehicle.

And the stories of his trips to Des Moines, and how he got there, are absolute fact. Right up there with Dan Gable stopping the team bus in Tiffin and making the wrestlers run the rest of the way in. I worked with Smiley (Gary Bloore) the entire time I went to school in the mid to late eighties.

Howe Column: There was pregame chirping and in-game chippiness. What was once forced on us has now become a heated and healthy rivalry. This is good. It's fun. And the Hawkeyes own bragging rights for another year:

This game should not have been close. Iowa should have won by 2 TD's. Stanley's lack of execution is mostly to blame. For the season, 8-4 sounds ok from the outside, until you see who Iowa defeated. No quality wins. Don't say Iowa State was a quality win. They were bad when Iowa played them and Iowa State would beat Iowa at this point in the season.

The players that Iowa has coming back next season should make everyone optimistic. Iowa has at least 2 NFL OL coming back next season. Iowa will fill the holes at TE, if either 87 or 38 decide to leave. Iowa is solid at DE. Lots of DB's and LB's returning. However, there are several glaring deficiencies that Iowa will have trouble correcting. 1. QB - Stanley needs to vastly improve. He has the physical tools, but he is not a good decision maker. 2. Lack of speed at RB and WR. 3. Lack of run stuffers at DT. 4. No punting game. Looking at Iowa's schedule, Iowa should be at least 8-4, again next season. Let's hope the Iowa gets some breaks and they can beat some of the big dogs get to double digit wins! Go Hawks!

I had to block him because his womens posts in the basketball section were driving me nuts. I was thinking the same thing as you that he has something mentally going on so I decided to block instead of being mean.

If you want to claim that Iowa State would beat Iowa at this point in the season, you have to concede that we would beat Wisconsin at this point in the season, making it at the very least a wash.

If it's one, based on your premise, it has to be the other as well. Wisconsin's offense has looked shaky in second half of the season losses to Northwestern, Penn State and Minnesota.

Agreed. Iowa would likely beat Wisconsin right now. I watched its game against Minnesota. The Badgers got worked.

Hard to believe they were No. 4 in the preseason AP Poll, the top ranked team in the Big Ten.

I saw him recently. I can’t remember where. Used to see him a lot more.
If you ever see him, tell him "Mad Dog" is now living in Wisconsin and says hi. He will remember who I am. His co-worker gave me the nickname when I dove headfirst into first base to try and beat a double play attempt in a softball game vs the Burge Residence Hall food service staff and students.

Our coaching staff is comical. Simply clueless game in and game out. Can't wait for Brian to be the next head coach. The fake field goal call was one of the dumbest calls of the entire season, and that is saying something.

But that 4th and 8 conversion at end was pure coaching genius wasn't it????

Agree Rob. Martinez is no Armstrong. Will be tougher to beat. At least we now have a 1 game experience against him.

yeah and part of their long drives against our defense were because the zebras did not see a single holding call on the edge this entire game, which is funny cause there were plenty egregious ones for them to see, by wide receivers and tight ends especially. I know holding happens on every play, but wow it was bad yesterday.

Those damn swing passes were maddening. You could see about every one of them coming and were still getting huge gains.

Is Aaron Mends potentially back next year? Or can't he get a medical redshirt?

Good thing their defense won't be a problem for anyone in this league
