How ya all feeling now?

I wonder if Cook's return will disrupt the team defense chemistry...?

a true test of coaching acumen. Are they talking to him about what's going on now... the changes that are working...how he needs to play to blend in with the rhythm the team has found. Equally important...is he a smart enough player to recognize it and prepare accordingly.

If so...this team could be very interesting by January. If only we had a point guard....er, wide receiver.

Iowa's D has improved. - Only to look at the other team's 3 shooting the last 2 games ....

ISU - 8/30 for 26%
UNI - 6/26 for 23%

I'm glad they finally got guys out there and be aggressive with hands up and in the face.

In truth - I really don't see the in the face D at the 3 line. I just hope that Iowa can shore it up a bit - way too many w/o 3s by the opposition this fall.

I feel like we will be in the NIT, which is what I thought preseason. Just a couple weeks ago I wondered if this team could win 10 games, so yeah, I'm feeling much better.

Much better than after the Omaha game, that is for sure. Good things happen when you play defense.

I was impressed with some of those rebounds Baer was bringing down. My Sling TV ESPN3 kept going out throughout the game, so I'm sure I missed some things.
Moss looked in control still.
Pemsl still looking good.
Wagner and Uhl playing better too.

One thing about a young team with a bit of talent...there can often be a big, often surprising and unexpected, jump in results...when the lights go on together...a team sport.

To sustain it can also be a bigger challenge for younger teams.

Baer and Jok bring energy and experience that can be contagious.

Beating both ISU and UNI is a real feather in their cap...building blocks.

I'm feeling a little better seeing this team finally start playing some defense. But I still don't see a NCAA tournament bid in our future, I'm hoping for NIT.

Let me point out the stark contrast in the Clone and Hawkeye fan bases:

Let's pretend we were ISU...I know, scary thought. But what would we be saying heading into conference play after a difficult start, then two impressive wins, one against a ranked team.

Clone fan - "we can win the B12, Kansas isn't that good, and we are looking to take Hilton Magic on the road."

Hawkeye Fan - "I don't see an NCAA bid in the cards, but we have a shot at the NIT".

Even the idiots on this board have a sense of realism. Ames is where realism and perspective goes to die.

I'm still fully on board with this team. I love the way they are playing right now.

Simply looking at 3-pt FG percentages, both UNI and ISU were 23% and 26% respectively. Omaha percentage was 36%. Are these differences based on how well we defended at the perimeter or based on cold vs. hot shooting? We should look a little closer at how many uncontested 3 pointers were made/missed in these three games. Still too many open looks in my opinion to make it to the NCAA tournament. The number of B1G wins will likely be determined by how effectively opponents can dribble drive, pass to the perimeter and make the open 3pt shot.

Most good teams can get an open 3 point shot at some point in the shot clock. The difference is making them work for those open shots so they feel rushed when they finally get it vs them getting an open shot early in the shot clock where they feel comfortable. UNI got open looks, but they had to work so hard to get them that they could never build any confidence.

I guess at this point the only concern is how Cook will fit in the mix. The current group and rotation has really started to gel so I almost hate to see any changes but Cook is obviously too good of a talent.

However, I think he definitely needs to come off the bench. Stay with up the same starting 5 and having him and Baer coming off the bench is some real depth.

If Iowa hadnt dropped that Omaha game they'd be in OK shape. Not NCAA tournament shape but close. That Omaha loss is really going to hurt for the rest of the season.

Iowa needs to take care of business these next two games then shock the boilermakers somehow. Then I'll start to believe

Folks. We r still the second worst team in the big10. Optimism? I call it reality. Conference play will be brutal.
