Kirk is a great coach and will right the ship.

Vandenberg will get better...fans just need to be patient. And there is no need to get the backups playing time...they are not ready. Whoever is the starter next season can learn at that time....no need to rush things right now.

How do you know?

I am not sure what game your are watching but VBerg did better last year than this year. It wouldnt be a bad idea to SEE what Rudock can do before next year. MAYBE we can get a Weisman sized suprise at QB if we gave Rudock a few series. What if Rudock can put up 300 yrds and a couple scores every game? Would you still sit by your "they are not ready" comment?

I respect what he has done, but the last two and a half years have not been trending so well. 7-5 with a bowl game win that at least saved the season. 7-5 and got stomped in the bowl game. 4-3 with a ceiling if they are lucky of 7-5. More than likely we are a 5-7 or god forbid, a 4-8 team this year.

That's some serious kool-aid you're pounding there. We're 7 games deep in the season and have played one of the easiest schedules of any BCS conference team. JVB has been absolutely garbage against some of the worst teams in all of college football and "fans just need to be patient"???!!! "No need to rush things right now"??! You think the rest of the college football world will wait for Cpt Conservative to catch up to the current landscape of college football?! There's being optimistic and there's being completely moronic. You sir, are the latter.

I'm not going to call the guy a moron but I do agree, we are past the point of waiting for JVB to get better. Sad thing is, he is actually getting worse. I'm sure James is a good guy, and I'm sure the guy commits himself a lot both in the film room and the practice field. But somewhere between the practice facility and the stadium James becomes a different person, incapable of leading an offense.

Didnt forget about those years. Also remember a horrible stretch of off the field problems where it appeared he had lost control of his team.

Right now, JVB is not a D1 QB. And Im not going to hold my breath of him getting it together any time soon. What scares me is if the backups are that far behind him, next year is going to be REALLY ugly.

I could not care less if the backup is "not ready." They will never get ready holding a clipboard. There is zero chance that they would be less effective than JVB, as probably 2/3 of the NAIA would be more effective.

I'm not meaning to call 83hawk a moron, only that his line of thinking is moronic. JVB is not going to get better. He hasn't shown anything that would make a sane person believe he is getting better. Last year he was mediocre at best and enjoyed being bailed out by Iowa's all time leading receiver. That game at the Shoe that everyone "seems" to remember so fondly and point to as an example of how good JVB can be was a joke. OSU never put any pressure on JVB and he still threw 2 pics with at least 2 others that hit OSU players directly in the hands but were dropped. Outside of the Pitt 4th quarter, JVB has been mediocre at best. What's worse is that he's also hurt us b/c he's incapable of using his feet (which is truly sad as McGloin was able to move the chains numerous times with his feet Sat and he is about as effective running the ball as a cigar store wooden indian) to provide another dimension that opposing D's would have to prepare for.

I haven't forgotten. But at the risk of sounding like a "what have you done for me lately" kind of guy, the vast majority of the accolades you speak of occurred nearly a decade ago.

We're on the 3rd disappointing season in a row since the Orange Bowl victory. Nice way to build on that momentum.

And what makes you think you think JVB is going to get better? He is mid-way through his senior season.. Patience?? JVB is running out of time. He only has 5 regular season games left in his career to get it figured out. It's not like we're talking about a sophomore.

Kirk was a very good coach. But his schtick is old and our opponents have figured him out. He weaknesses (clock and game management at the fore) have become painfully obvious. And he will not... grow and change, no matter what. He's hopelessly stuck in a narrow mindset.

That's not the sign of a great coach. That's the sign of one that has seen his better days.

KF has been reluctant to change with the game and focuses on execution being 90% of his success - if we execute, we win. In the meantime, a guy like O'Brien learned from Belichick how to gameplan, scheme, and expose weaknesses and mismatches to give you the best chance to win.

Iowa has more Belichik offspring than PSU does.

No he won't. That's not a slight on his character, it's just the evidence of his ability. His career record as a starter is 12-10. He's had one quarter of one game where he "won" the game for Iowa. That's in the blind squirrel realm of probability. With a good running game, he can manage a game, but if it needs to fall on his shoulders to take over the game - other than the 4th quarter of the Pittsburgh game, I haven't seen the evidence of his ability to do so.

Except only 1 of those coaches knows how to run an offense and that guy isn't at Iowa. Kirk caught Zeus in a bottle between 02-04, the 09 season was a mix of lightning in a bottle and what remained of a HQ recruiting class being seniors.
