How much did MSU spend to pay off the refs this time?

I can't believe that in a game that has 10 more Mich. St. fouls, and 20 more Iowa FT that people can complain about the refs. Sure there were missed calls that hurt Iowa, but I don't see anyone crying about the missed calls that hurt Mich. St. There were a couple of those fouls where in the stands my buddies and I looked at each other and said, WOW, we got a call there.

The only problem I had was with the non travel call, and the T on Fran. Granted from the stand I can't understand how Fran got that T. If it was cause he was out of the box, then Izzo should have gotten 1 of those several times himself.

Yet this things did not cause the loss. Officials miss calls, they aren't perfect. There was no pattern of calls or preference of calls that benefited Mich. St. If anything the refs called things much tighter against the Mich. St. players in my opinion and that is backed up by them having 10 more fouls than us, and us having 20+ more FT attempts.

There is nothing illegal about the ref's officiating or a conspiracy. Had Iowa done 5 or 6 things better they would have won, and it's on them. However, to paraphrase Bilas:

"That was traveling (on MSU)"
"The ball hit the mid court line and should have been over and back".
"Fran got a T for being out of the coaches box so why wasn't Izzo called for it?"
"Looked like McCabe was fouled but no call".
"Looked like Marble was fouled but no call".
"Looks like there was contact against Gessell".
"Looked like a clean block to me (Iowa player blocked a shot)"

Just think if one or two of those calls are made correctly we probably win. But the refs give so much deference to Izzo that fairness doesn't come into play.

Even the opening minute of the game.. Woody gets called for bumping MSU's guard 30 feet from the hoop. Fair enough. But 30 seconds later when Iowa had the ball, MSU's player does the exact same thing. No call.

I'd love Fran to tell some truth as his post-game presser.

Tough game, Michigan St played a tough physical game... made us earn it...and in the end we had our opportunities to win the game. But we just didn't capitalize on them. That's on us. We didn't close the deal.

That being said... it's become clear to me, that in this league...you're not going to get the benefit of any calls unless your name is Izzo or Ryan. Both of those men have built good programs...to their credit, and they're fine coaches. But this isn't the NBA...I'd like to think that our officiating will be even-handed...no preference to star players or coaches. I realize that I may be biased in this sense...so I'd welcome the input of you guys out there who saw the game. What do you think? What did you see?

BUT...understanding that, it's my job to get my guys ready to play, coach them to play through the tough moments that happen in competition and win the game. And we're going to focus on doing that. Nothing is given to you in this league, you have to earn it. And tonight, we didn't earn it.

If the conference sees fit to fine me, OK. I'll willing to accept that and pay the price. Hopefully...it will make us a better league in the long run. That is my hope.

This is a joke right?! I mean it has to be.

Iowa shot 43 FT's. MSU shot 20 FT's and 4 of those came at the end where the Hawks had to foul. The difference could have been 43 FT's to 16 FT's........

Sure the refs missed the travel call. Sure they missed the ball going over and back but if Iowa had shot 20 FT's to 43FT's @ MSU then this board would be in FULL meltdown mode. Jon would have started a petition and Terry Brandstad would have mobilized the Iowa political system.

MSU beat us. Period, end of sentence. They were the tougher team even without their 2 post guys.

Considering MSU was taking far more 3's and jump shots, Iowa SHOULD have had a lot more FT attempts than MSU.

Blaming the refs is what ISU fans and 5 year olds do. Please be better than 5 year olds, and ISU fans.

22 of the 29 fouls committed by MSU were where Iowa was in the act of shooting. This accounts for the disparity in the number of FTs. So don't talk about FT disparity.

The big disappointment for us was when Utoff, an 80% FT shooter clanged two front end 1+1 free throws. He makes 3 of the 4 (under his average) and we win in regulation.

Also, Gesell, Utoff and Basabe go a combined 6-21. Wow. That's bad shooting. Especially considering none of them took a shot with the shot clock winding down. And only four of these attempts had the shooter being fouled in the act and getting free throws.

One would think that at home we would shoot better than 25% from the 3-pt line. One would also think that at home we would shoot better than 37% from the field. One would also think that at home we should shoot better than 69% from the FT line. Granted, MSU had something to do with the FG and 3PT shooting; they are a pretty good defensive club. But shooting FTs at home should be nearly automatic for our better shooters and it was not.

Yes, there were bad calls. MSU can say the same thing as they got the short end of some calls as well. Of course, one could argue that at home you expect to get the 50-50 calls. In the end, it wasn't the bad calls that cost us the game, it was our inability to shoot the ball as well we have all season that cost us. If we shoot our season averages against them, we score 2 more 3PT goals and 3 more FGs. That's 12 more points.

No, MSU did not beat us. We beat ourselves by not doing what we have done in many other games this season.
