Iowa seldom has true backups ready for real game play. Fry used to mix up starters and non-starters in real situations. One thing he did better.
And it's my opinion that this is the way to do it. I simply don't see how throwing an entire second team onto the field late in a game to either milk the clock or take a knee does anything that can be construed as providing the backups with meaningful game experience.
