How does a kid like Kaepernick end up at Nevada?

It just never ceases to amaze me how some kids get over looked and fall through the cracks in recruiting. I can't help but seeing him as a bigger faster version of what John Elway was. He's got a cannon of an arm can throw with touch (did you see that throw he made to Gore while rolling out to his left) The touchdown he threw to Crabtree was an absolute dime. And the deep ball he threw right over Davis's shoulder was perfect. His legs spoke for themselves. Not to mention how he came back after throwing as bad of a pick 6 as you'll ever see. You look at that 49ers team and can't help think that if they can keep that team together the next few years how tough they will be. If Moss has another year in him and if they can get anything at all out of Jenkins along with Manningham coming back. Their passing game can potentially be just as dangerous as their running. That's probably a stretch with as good as their running game is but it doesn't have to be for them to win. And it's mostly stemming from a kid who had no other D1 offers then Nevada.

look at all the NFL QBs and you'll see a very surprising amount from small schools. not sure what the formula is, but it seems the 5* all american in HS doesn't translate well into NFL QB.

Running Qbs don't last in the NFL.

mobile QBs do though. Rogers, Luck and co are the new blueprint. if you're going to run them like Wash does with Griffin, that will end badly. you need to take more of the approach of Seattle with Wilson. don't set up designed QB runs. that is just asking for trouble.

True. Delaware and Nevada are going to be represented in the final 4. I'm kinda rooting for them to match up in the superbowl. That style of play is taking the football world by storm. Oregon has been doing it for a while now but with it having success in the NFL like it has this yr it makes you think the game is changing. Don't get me wrong there's still a place for Brady and Manning type of QBs. But people will end up looking back and saying how in the world did Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder and Jake Locker all got picked ahead of Kaepernick.

Unfortunatly I don't see RG3 having a long career. He's too reckless like Vick. Kaepernick is different in that he's so much bigger and stronger. If he's smart with the hits he takes and mostly doesn't take he could rewrite some records

Apparently, Kaepernick was/is a very good baseball player and was actually drafted out of high school. Nevada was actually the only offer he received for football, so he took it. All other schools were spooked that maybe he might bolt (at some point) to play baseball.

Very true statement. He was 6'5" and only weighed 170 lbs his senior season in high school. He wanted to play football in college and Nevada was the only college that offered!

The Cubs drafted him as a pitcher because he could throw a 93 mph fastball. Even after kicking tail at Nevada and breaking all kind of records... he was passed up in the draft by every team until San Fran traded picks with Denver and selected him in the second round.

Imagine if Denver would have kept the pick... we probably wouldn't have seen Peyton Manning on the Broncos this year, and Denver with Kaepernick would have beaten Baltimore. OR he could have been benched over Tebow and out of football.

Naah, it just seems that way, the vast majority are from BCS schools.

Romo/Flacco are from FCS schools.
Roethlisberger is from the MAC.
Kaepernick is from Nevada.

Every other starting QB is from a BCS school I believe I am doing this off the top of my head. Cardinals are a mess so I excluded them.

This is almost comical to say he is a better Qb than Manning.

NFL D-coordinators will adjust to this read option stuff. I'm not sure how exactly, my guess would be more hybrid types on D, regardless they will catch up. Then it will be interesting to see how these "running" quarterbacks adjust to the adjustment. It has been mixed results with Cam Newton we will see about the rest.

So instead of Stanzi Iowa should have rode out Jake Christiansen, the thought of what could have been.....

At this stage of their careers, I would definitely take the kid over Peyton. He had his coming out party against my Bears earlier this year and I mentioned to my friend that he had Wally Pipped Adam Smith after his first game.

For an nfl qb to succeed we all know they have to FIRST be a great passer and be able to read defenses and make correct decisions in the passing game.

QBs need to run second in the pros and it is icing on the cake if your qb can run/scramble like bradshaw, montana, young, etc which just helps keep drives alive and can prevent a sack.

RGIII will be lucky to survive if he keeps running alot , vick is/was always injured.

One big I think difference with Newton and Kaepernick is their supporting cast. I think Newtons offense is pretty similar without as good of an O line. I think Steve Smiths best days are behind him and they certainly need more help at WR even with him playing well. Olsen has been great there. They have a pretty good thunder and lightning backfield when healthy. I think Newton kinda went sideways this year for a multitude of reasons. One being hunger and desire. Kaepernick was like a 4.0 student and just an overall great kid. I think Kaepernick has a better work ethic has his head in the right place. Don't forget Kaepernick was in a spot where he was taking over for a highly popular and respected guy in Smith and he had to first win the locker room. He's done that and then some. Newton was handed the big money and the face of the franchise day one and seems more worried about himself and what his next endorsement is going to be. It'll be interesting to see this off season if we hear about Newton changing his workout habits and if he can become a leader. I think this offense is here to stay because it essentially takes out the DEs strength rushing the passer. (witch is the strength of alot of teams) It makes them have to pause and read the play or guess/gamble. If your qb can pass and run that type of offense it's just tough on a D. It turns it into a numbers game and leaves running lanes and one on one in the passing game. Defenses can stop any one thing. But this offense provides options and makes defenses pick their poison.

Actually, there couldn't have been a better place for Kaepernick to go. He went to play for the guy who invented the freaking Pistol offense. Pretty much the same as Montana playing for Bill Walsh, sometimes the stars just align.

Kaepernick will never be a Pro-Bowl QB. Notice how you never see any of these "duel-threat" QBs having success in their 3rd or 4th season in the league. Daunte Culpepper, Byron Leftwich, Vince Young, Cam Newton...they all have early success, and then fall off later as they take hit after hit. Kaepernick has done nothing but match Alex Smith accomplishments with SF so far. He's played, what, 8 or 9 games, so he hasn't been figured out yet, but he will.

In what universe were Culpepper or Leftwich dual-threat QBs? If I didn't know any better, I would think your troll was bordering on racism.

Edit: After looking at some numbers, I will maybe give you Culpepper. He ran a little bit before he had his knee messed up. But not Leftwich. He averaged less than 1 ypc in college and has fewer than 500 career NFL yards.
