How does a kid like Kaepernick end up at Nevada?

In what universe were Culpepper or Leftwich dual-threat QBs? If I didn't know any better, I would think your troll was bordering on racism.

Edit: After looking at some numbers, I will maybe give you Culpepper. He ran a little bit before he had his knee messed up. But not Leftwich. He averaged less than 1 ypc in college and has fewer than 500 career NFL yards.

Culpepper ran for over 2,500 yards in his career. For some odd reason, I got Leftwich mixed up with Kordell Stewart, as they were both backup Steelers QBs. My bad. Still racist though. Alex Smith is also an example of a "Dual threat" QB who was very average in the NFL. Not racist anymore.

Kaepernick will never be a Pro-Bowl QB. Notice how you never see any of these "duel-threat" QBs having success in their 3rd or 4th season in the league. Daunte Culpepper, Byron Leftwich, Vince Young, Cam Newton...they all have early success, and then fall off later as they take hit after hit. Kaepernick has done nothing but match Alex Smith accomplishments with SF so far. He's played, what, 8 or 9 games, so he hasn't been figured out yet, but he will.

That's what makes this new. Of those qbs you mentioned only Newton is still playing and or have played this type of offense. Vince Young didn't play this type of O on any of the NFL teams he'd been on. Newton is only in his 2nd yr. His problem this yr is more with his own work ethic (borderline Jamarcus Russell territory if he don't get it together) and his supporting cast. Newtons ceiling is as high as anyones. But it's anyones guess how close he could get to it. Bringing up Culpepper and Leftwich is a joke. Neither ran anything close to an offense that featured them as runners. I don't think it's Kaepernick that teams will be trying to figure out. It's the niners offense. Kaepernicks skills and size are what they are.

What about Randall Cunningham, Fran Tarkenton, and Steve Young?

It's alittle early to say that Kaepernick won't be a pro bowler. However that will be an uphill climb for him because he has to deal with Rodgers Brees and the popularity of RG3 going forward. Matt Ryan is in that convo if he takes advantage of the weapons he has to play with too. I'm not sure going forward who gets left off if Kaepernick ever gets on but to say he can't after getting a taste of what he can do is jumping the gun.

It just never ceases to amaze me how some kids get over looked and fall through the cracks in recruiting. I can't help but seeing him as a bigger faster version of what John Elway was. He's got a cannon of an arm can throw with touch (did you see that throw he made to Gore while rolling out to his left) The touchdown he threw to Crabtree was an absolute dime. And the deep ball he threw right over Davis's shoulder was perfect. His legs spoke for themselves. Not to mention how he came back after throwing as bad of a pick 6 as you'll ever see. You look at that 49ers team and can't help think that if they can keep that team together the next few years how tough they will be. If Moss has another year in him and if they can get anything at all out of Jenkins along with Manningham coming back. Their passing game can potentially be just as dangerous as their running. That's probably a stretch with as good as their running game is but it doesn't have to be for them to win. And it's mostly stemming from a kid who had no other D1 offers then Nevada.

Possibly some combination of a late bloomer and late developer? Grades? Poor scouting? How about a really bad HS system or coach that even led to Nevada?

Depending upon when he went all tat and got the sleeves this may have been a "red" flag.

I saw him once playing for Nevada and there was NO, absolutely no reason from this game this kid could ever be a professional QB.

Pardon all of us for missing on this guy although he is talent and fun to watch.

Good gawd man, do all black dudes look alike to you? Byron Leftwich couldn't out run a turtle. With that wind up you could eat a sandwich by time he released the ball. How in world do you ever get this cat mixed up with a dual threat, running or any type of mobile QB.

Very true statement. He was 6'5" and only weighed 170 lbs his senior season in high school. He wanted to play football in college and Nevada was the only college that offered!

The Cubs drafted him as a pitcher because he could throw a 93 mph fastball. Even after kicking tail at Nevada and breaking all kind of records... he was passed up in the draft by every team until San Fran traded picks with Denver and selected him in the second round.

Imagine if Denver would have kept the pick... we probably wouldn't have seen Peyton Manning on the Broncos this year, and Denver with Kaepernick would have beaten Baltimore. OR he could have been benched over Tebow and out of football.

Not sure if serious...?

any team with a good pass rush has shown to give kaep serious problems.. he has some serious happy feet after he starts taking some hits

I don't think the read option will have much of a shelf life...but having a QB who can do things with his legs (and not featuring him running) will have a place...Staubach, Tarkenton, Cunningham, Flutie...there is a place...more on escapability and extending plays than designed runs...as others have said, too many designed runs in the league will not end well.

Alex Smith pretty much proved any idiot with a pulse can QB this SF team deep in the playoffs.

It depends on the hits they take. Kaepernick wasn't touched on alot of the runs he had. Qbs like that may end up with shelf lives similar to RBs because of it. I don't see Wilson or RG3 lasting long if they play that way game in game out. I think guys like Kaepernick Newton and yes I'll say it Tebow (if he gets another chance) could play that style for awhile if for no other reason they are bigger then alot of rbs and Lbs for that matter. Vick has played quite awhile already considering his style of play in terms of seasons. Not so much in availability all year long tho. I think he's only played all 16 games in a yr once. He'll be a starter someplace next yr. RG3 has to have their front office nervous. For his Vick like style. I don't think you'll see every team fall in love with the read option and want to have their version of it like the wildcat. But teams that can get a qb like those bigger and athletic ones (that can throw) would be crazy to not use it. I think for a defense to commit to stopping it they are leaving themselves vulnerable to big play quick hitters and teams are reluctant to sell out in that way.

How many idiots do you know could play the game he had against New Orleans in the playoffs last year and throw for 70% completion percentage this yr till he got hurt? Now he has had far from an all star career. But to say he's an idiot or a bum of an NFL qb wouldn't quite be fair either.

It is all about mobility and escapability. It isn't about designed runs. Next year teams are going to have that de that gets released on the read option just hit the qb. No stall or slow play...make them give and make them get happy feet. Once the coaches see their qbs take enough of those hits the owners and coaches may decide it isn't worth the money. Heck luck could be considered a dual threat if they designed runs for him (he is like 4.5 40 guy) but they aren't doing that...why? Because they know he is more valuable when he can play.
