How do we keep both QBs?

IMO, with the talent both Iowa QBs possess, one will transfer... some other school will convince one to transfer.

Does Iowa need to keep both QBs?

Can we have a 1A QB and a 1B QB? Would that satisfy both QBs?
Alternate QBs per half? Per offensive series?
The first half QB may always play with the first string. The second half QB may always play with players lower on the depth chart.
Run the score up so both QBs routinely get into the game? Could develop depth as others get to play.

I'm really not concerned about somebody leaving if that is their choice.

I want to pick the best QB and play him. Prior to last week, I thought it was Jake. Now I believe it's time to give CJ his shot.

If that upsets somebody or somebody leaves... so be it.

Rudock is here because he wants to be a doctor and he likes Iowa's pre-med program. Plus he only has 1 year left after this year, so I have a hard time seeing him leave if he gets benched.

Something that could change that is if he graduates in May in 4 years. I have no idea if JR is close to graduating, but I did not know that Sokal would graduate last May until he announced he was transfering.

Beathard, if he gets benched, knows he will play next year every time Rudock is hurt, and after this year, he only has to wait 1 more year for an almost guaranteed starting spot his senior year.

In summary, neither guy is leaving.

I honestly believe that you cant let that affect your gameplay, whomever they decide is the better option (CJB). I think the coaches should try their best to convince the other QB to stay but it shouldnt change the playing time of the better QB. the problem with the two QB system, even if both are good, is that any time spent on the lesser QB is playing time that could have been better utilized by the superior QB.

That said, I have no problem using both QBs to find out who is better, or using the backup in garbage time. Unless you have two completely different styles of QBs, I dont see a benefit in sharing time.

Right now I think we could say this is a trial stage to see who the better option is. But this should be figured out in the next two games at a minimum.

I can't think of any teams that have been really successful platooning QBs. It has it's pros and cons, but mostly cons.

KF needs to take the QB that gives Iowa the best chance of winning and play him. The other can ride the bench and push the starter to get better.

Sorry, but I can't think of anything more perfect for Jake than to step back and operate as a back-up as he prepares to take the MCAT and go to med school. He completely knows the offense, so he doesn't need to do a ton of prep. He can focus on his future while also having had the experience of playing a lot of football for a Big Ten football team.

Stanley Jackson and Joe Germaine say hi. Chris Leak and Tim Tebow too.

I had a bad feeling about Jake once I heard that he had to skip some practice or film session to study last year. Hey Jake, you aren't here on an academic scholarship!

Do we know how Jake did in Organic Chemistry? My understanding is that the vast majority of aspiring doctors who take that at Iowa quickly find out that they are not as smart as the Indian and Chinese students on campus. I mean, it would totally stink if Jake got a D+ in that class and still thinks he's going to a medical school located within the borders of the United States, and continues to waste his time studying, to the detriment of the football team.

I hear he did well on the short answers, but fell a bit short on the longer essays.

As others have said, the imperative is not keeping both guys. The first priority is identifying the best guy to help win games. How that situation is handled is one of the difficult parts of the head coach's job.

This is not really an excuse for JR to stay at Iowa. There are other schools where he can become a doctor.

True, but it does make his priorities a little different than, say, sokol, derby, Christensen, Shimonek, etc., who all transfered solely to get more playing time at QB.

No, he's here on an athletic scholarship. Maybe I should put it like this: athletic SCHOLARSHIP.

When it comes down to it, a scholarship is about being a student and getting good grades. If the student chooses a tougher academic program, that's their choice. But an athletic scholarship is an academic gift for an athlete. That's why there are stringent requirements for qualification. That's why some don't qualify for a scholarship and have to work at getting their grades in order (Shonn Greene).

Organic Chemistry and Principles of Biology are flunk out classes for all those pre-dental, pre-med, and pre-vet students.

I was in those classes more for chem engineering or biochem and if each class started with 300 students then after the first few classes 50 had dropped and after the first midterm another 50-100 students had dropped.

It didnt take a lot of students long to change their major away from dental-med-vet.

If Jake is still pre-med then he did well in those classes.

I am just curious. As a chem Engineering major, did you find organic chemistry hard? I have heard the horror stories about organic chemistry being so hard but I have known some ChemE majors who sailed through with no problem. Just curious.

<<Does Iowa need both QBs?>>

For this season, it's possible. Next year? With Scherff and Donnal gone, and Jake having susceptibility to knee issues, CJ needs to be it.

I don't think Jake would leave, hard to tell with CJ. Internet legends had him leaving last year.
