How did Nebraska stop our run game?

They lined up with DT's spread and nobody too close to the center. LBs filled. I think KF or Eddie described it. They had a good scheme. And I'll guess we will see ILL do something like it.

They put a SS on our strong side or wide side and had a 4-3 or a 5-2, which put 8 committed to stopping the run. The SS also played pass, similar to our Cash. The DL was also very active, didn't try to make plays, and stuck to their gaps. The LB's filled well. There was really nowhere for us to run. It didn't help that Schott and Plumb were in there. Huge step down from Kallenberger to Plumb.

Illinois won't have to do too much different than they did last year at Kinnick. In the first half it seemed Iowa kept running the zone off-tackle run and the Illini kept stuffing it over and over and over again.

I would sure as heck like to know what Sparty did to stop NORTHWESTERN'S run game -- that's something Iowa hasn't been able to do most years when it counts.

Wisconsin will do the same thing as Nebraska. Iowa cannot beat Wisconsin with our current dreadful QB. Petras has been feeling mostly phantom pressure in the pocket; against Wisconsin that pressure will be real in the form of a delayed blitzing linebacker and I’d bet good money Petras will commit at least 1 interception and 1 fumble.

We still running short side zone run?
We do it a lot of times on calls. With the SS on the wide side, it was an extra guy to block.

Other times, when it's audibled to, it's because the QB comes up to the line and takes a count of bodies on each side of the center and calls it/changes it to the side with the most favorable number.

I thought Nebby had a good scheme, they were committed to stopping our run game. To our credit we kept pounding it. KF said they tweaked a couple things at half and we did run the ball better but it was still tough running.

I was surprised Mehki only got 5 carries and Tyler 30? I was happy to see Tyler get over 100 yards which was quite an accomplishment.

Next question. Let's assume Illinois uses the same defensive scheme what does Iowa do differently on offense to counteract?

There was a run on the first TD series where Mekhi took a shot to the thigh. He was calling to be replaced, but instead he limped out to line up as a WR before subbing out the next play.

He had the TD in the second half, but I wonder if the injury continued to bother him and Iowa just figured it was safer to run one guy to finish out the game.

Mekhi also has a history of fumbling in the 4th qtr in tight games, and while it's been great to see him have great games in the previous 3 blowouts, it's possible KF didn't want to take any chances. Goodsen looked good, but it's clear he's also wearing down a bit as the season progresses without a bye week -- is looking a little more tentative, a step slower, and not quite as fresh. He's a gamer, tho!

Except that Iowa held NW to like 30 yards rushing in the second half of the game this year. They know what they have to do.

Illinois plays a completely different style of defense. It's a more traditional 4-3. Nebraska ran all over the Illini with the quarterback. It will be interesting to see what we can do against their front. Petras is going to have to make some plays.

Petras was asked this after the game and he said Nebby was doing some things a little different as far as angles they were coming from and how they lined up plus we saw how many they were putting in the box.

Petras said the coaches and players made the adjustments at halftime but he didnt go into specifics. It looked most 2nd half runs were more straightahead aimed at a certain part of the line so maybe they changed some combo blocking and how they were blocking lbkrs.

Pretty easy to stuff our run when we have a qb that isn't going to beat anyone throwing the football. Wait until we play Wisconsin, Petras is going to have an incredibly long day. I fear it will look like the year Stanley went up there and we had about 70 total yards of offense for the entire game.

Top two tacklers were LBs, then safeties. They played great gaps, and took away the cutback by staying home. Until I looked at stats, I didn’t realize that Goodson had either as many carries (30) or yards (111). Hard work for the young man.

At PSU Sarg got more carries. I remember a scene between plays when Tyler showed exasperation that he was coming out

Wow, I didn't realize Goodson carried it that much.
