Bowl Tie-Ins Explained Here

The former Pac-12 teams - Cal and Stanford - will remain eligible for the former Pac-12 bowl ties and affiliations. That means if any of those four aren't in the College Football Playoff, they'll be eligible for the Alamo, Independence, Holiday, LA, Las Vegas, and Sun bowls.

Iowa vs ole piss in the formerly know as the outback bowl.

Oh boy. Who could possibly give a shit.

Its likelly that they'll have a lot of opt-outs. It wont be the same team as regular season. But they've been up and down this year so "same team" is an oxymoron.

It probably won't be worth watching tom me other than seeing some future guys get some time which is cool. My guess is most or all of these guys sit out:

Lachey
KJ
Jackson
Higgins
Castro
Harris (already out)
Colby
Jones
Richman

So really if it's not the same team it's nothing more than a watered down scrimmage, and if you look at it that way it can be fun I guess. But no way do I care if we win it. Bowls are different now. They don't mean anything with CFP games and guy sitting out (which I'm fine with btw).

Here's my bowl projection.

Outside of the playoffs, there will be a lot of players who get more snaps than they do in a regular season game.

In some ways, maybe they hold more value? Maybe even the lamer the bowl, the more the value. Bigger bowl, more financial value...but relative to the overall $$ involved, the difference is marginal. No recruiting value. Not sure there was a ton anyway, but there is zilch now.

But, if we're going on the value of the extra practice time thing. It's extra practice time AND more game time for guys who are mostly likely to be starting next year....unless incoming from the portal keeps them further down the depth chart.

So, the lamer the bowl....the more potentially NFL/portal bound players sit out. That means more reps, more opportunity for the next man in. Value!

Before you come at me...
Schtum!!!

Let me have this. Just let me have this. I gotta walk away with some kind of sunshine and hope for next year.

I am sure there will be a few guys who don't play, but most will. This is evolving issue for sure, and especially now that the kids have agents this will get more pronounced, but in recent times Iowa has had high draft picks stay and play in bowl games. Some guys are just gamers and love to play in any game and some guys are just team first folks. I won't judge either way. Its a personal choice. That said, if you play football in fear of injury, you will fulfill the prophecy. Think how many guys blow a knee in practice or working out? Unless you climb into bubble wrap for the next 3 months, you could get injured at any point. Why not have fun and go some where warm and play one more game with your boys?

If Higgins decides to play I hope he uses a bunch of his NIL money to buy a $50,000,000 insurance policy. He's projected 2nd round pretty much everywhere.

That's a great point. I forgot about insurance. Yes, that is a wise move to hedge your bets for sure.

This is why the system is so back assward right now. The conferences and schools get a good pay day for a bowl. So, lets say the system were not stupid and schools could just pay the kids directly. So, you take a million dollars for the players. For every kid entering the draft, you buy him a seven figure injury insurance policy. Those honestly don't cost that much to get. That gives the kid some comfort. Then, you take the rest and give your starters a playing bonus of 25k for playing in the bowl game and lesser amounts to other players, plus they are getting an all expense paid trip with first class travel and accomodations to some place warm in December. At some point, this is getting to be a pretty good deal for a 22-year old kid to play in the bowl game. All we had to due was slice off a million bucks from the bowl money.

I like it...

I agree...its resembles a scrimage more than ever these days. And I think fans are coming to understand it.

I get it. My theory is the Agents are the silent influencers these days. You sign with me and, I 'll advance you $350,000 with these conditions...one of which is you won't play in the bowl game.
