How could the Bielema to Arkansas move have happened?

Just guesses here...

He was making $2.5 mil per year at Wisconsin...I would guess he went to them and said Arkansas has offered X (I would guess at least $3.5mil) and Wisconsin said no...and he leaves.

OR....something in Madison didn't sit well with him..he lost 6 assistants last year...an insane amount....and the budget for assistants there was not large...perhaps that was a problem. But that athletic department has a lot of money.

Wisconsin went to three straight Rose Bowls (yes, this year is an asterisk)....its not like Urban Meyer scared him, he just signed up to be in the same division as Alabama and Texas A&M. So it has nothing to do with competition.

My guess is there has to be something behind the scenes

I'm guessing he sees what is happening at OSU and doesn't see the success as frequent as it has been in the near future. Also, I think it is the money thing you mentioned.

I'm thinking money has to be the main thing here. I'm sure he's getting a considerable raise that he didn't think he could get in Wisconsin. Plus he's probably has more money to spend for assistants like you were saying. If I had done what he's done over the past 3 years and my school wouldn't match an offer and I see Ferentz is making nearly 4 million, I'd be mad too.

He wants to test himself against the big boys. Plain and simple. The dude is ambitious and knows the (college football) glamour and big money are not located in the upper Midwest.

He's going into the same Division against the best team in the sport...Alabama. That can't be it

He's spoiled the Wisconsin fan base, they want Rose Bowls now and he knows he's not going to be able to get that anymore. Arkansas fans will take second or third place finishes, plus for more money, why the hell wouldn't you go.

It's because he wants to return to Iowa but doesn't want to make a move within the conference, so he is going to Arkansas, will get fired in three years, and will come to Iowa when we're looking for a coach.

I understand this, however, I think it goes along with the raise. It's the KF effect. He's striking while the iron is hot. He knows that Wisconsin could easily be an annual 7-5 team. So why not take the chance when it comes to move to Arkansas where he can get the raise. he's not going to top what he has done at Wisky the last 3 years while still at wisconsin. I think he's reading the tea leaves.

JD - their assistant budgets seemed to be better than Iowa's. I thought Chryst was making close to 750 when he left, but maybe my memory is bad.

I said on here before that Badger fans don't like him. I know a ton of them and probably 75% of them hate Bielema and think he stinks because they had the same irrational national title hopes that Iowa had a few years ago that went unmet. In addition, according to folks I know, it sounds like he is kind of a horn dog around town and his welcome was wearing a little thin, but I would be interested to know what Racer thinks of my points above bince he is on the ground in Madison and is HN's official voice of the Badgers.

I think this hits the nail on the head. I'm in law school at Boston College right now, and for many people here, if you aren't trying to land a job with a downtown Boston or NYC firm, there's no point to being in the game. The SEC is the downtown Boston and NYC of college football.

Note: I'm not promoting this mindset, nor am I chastising it. A lot of my classmates who are very ambitious are nice people. My wife and I want to move back to the Midwest, where I will be a much-less-handsomely-paid version of Kurt. Different strokes, baby.

Arkansas fans are just as irrational as every other fan base, they don't want second place.

Well, you found a way to analogize Bielema to Arkansas to your legal career. Congratulations.

They've never known any better. Fan bases become even more irrational once they get a taste of the good life. Wisconsin fans got that, Arkansas fans never have in the SEC.

Wait, you are in law school? DID YOU CONSULT ME BEFORE MAKING THIS DECISION TO ATTEND BC? I hope like hell you got a giant scholarship or that could turn into the biggest mistake of your life. Sadly, most of your classmates will quickly learn that their only shot of ever being in the game was by doing better on the LSAT.

So Arkansas fans are like Iowa fans?

Bill - given the Esq on your name, would you advise a youngster to pay over $41k to go to Boston College in this legal market? The news that Cover3 is in LS is bigger than the Bielema story. Dude always just said "grad school" or something vague like that. My head might explode.
