How can this stat be right?

Jarrod Uthoff has 50 blocked shot this season.
Adam Woodbury has 64 blocked shots...in his career (he has 3 this season).
At their current rates, Uthoff will pass him by the end of January.

Man I am so tired of the Woodbury bashing. Yes, his offensive game has never materialized, but he is a big body that is disruptive down low. JU is athletic with freakishly long arms who is disruptive on the perimeter and in the box. I, like everyone else, would take 5 JU's over 5 Woodbury's but Woodbury is an important piece to this teams success. Won't resonate to most until next year when our tallest player will be 6'8 and we are out boarded by 10 each game.

Woody doesn't go for blocks, if he did he would get called for a lot of fouls. He stands strait up and makes guys shoot over and around him which allows opportunities for JU, Baer, Uhl and Basabe before them to block shots.

True, but that will be more a indictment of Fran's (and his staff) recruiting fail... than a validation of Woodbury. 3 straight classes with no big man?!

Les Jepsen did not get many blocks either, but he was a great defender as is Adam Woodbury. Les was able to take is abilities into the NBA as I feel that Adam can do. I appreciated talented big men like these that control the inside with position.

lol... You e got to be kidding me right? Seriously No way!!! Les was a 2nd round Pick and came on and had strong Senior Season both offensively and Defensively. Woody will have to do more than he has done to date to even get on a draft radar..

Why, just why start another thread to bash on Adam? He has upped his game this season and should be garnering at least some praise from fans. Adam has increased his minutes while also decreasing his fouls, increased his FG% and FT%, and also increased his PPG and RPG. Yet lets bash the kid on not being a great shot blocker?

Good lord Adam does so much for this team that people just brush off. Like his defensive positioning when denying his man the ball. His hedging is very good but people don't notice it because all they think about is how he used to foul out on the perimeter once a game when he was younger. He rarely ever gets called for that foul anymore. He also is basically the only guy that consistently boxes his man out. Go back and watch some tape and you will see the space Adam creates for either him or his teammates to get the rebound.(Unfortunately poor boxing out from other players has resulted in that space being used by opposing team's players to grab the rebound at times.) There are probably numerous other things that I'm forgetting about at the moment but I think I've made my point.

For those with short term memory loss, our defense under Fran was ATROCIOUS before Woodbury stepped on campus. Since that time, we have been a darn good defensive team. Having a big, bulky seven-footer in the lane to take up space, interrupt cutting thru the lane, alter shots, and limit opponent offensive rebounding is invaluable. I can all about guarantee that our defense takes a big step back next year after he graduates.

People start a thread and immediately some get offended and take as bashing, signs of the times.. Easily offended anymore lol..

You guys are such negative thinkers. I took this as a thread to praise Uthoff.

Give a win to the trolls. Anytime Woody is shown in a negative light it is now perceived as bashing because of all the previous threads. The OP being around the board for awhile solidifies that they should have known it would be perceived as such. Not to mention the OP quoted and edited a post mentioning woody would "deny that he fouled" and that's what sold me on his attempt to bash Adam. If the main point was to praise Uthoff, why even mention Adam at all?

There have been a lot of big guys in the NBA who play about 6-8 minutes a game, avg 2 pts and 4 bounds a game. It is like bullpen catcher in baseball where a guy can be in the major leagues for 15 years

So you believe Woody will be this type of guy?

Blocks come from help defense in the post typically ( uthoff has a unique skill set so he gets blocks as a 3 which is nuts) woody is usually d'ing up the other teams best big so he doesn't block shots. Unfortunately there isn't a stat for being a big dude who disrupts post offense credit isn't given but oh well.

I don't really understand why a player needs to be compared to Uthoff who is having one of the best seasons for Iowa basketball in a long time.

The Woodbury bashing is getting quite old. We've known from his freshman year that he wouldn't be an offensive juggernaut. We've also known he doesn't have hops. He is a space eater who can alter shots by having his hands up and taking up space as well as pushing bodies away from the basket which opens up rebounds for Woody as well as others.

This may have been a thread to praise Uthoff and he deserves it but to compare his blocks to Woody's makes no sense when blocks are not a part of Woody's game. A lot of Woody's blocks come from him not even jumping but more from players jumping into him. JU should be measured against past and future shot blockers in order to put his achievements in the proper perspective. I don't believe the op was trying to bash Woody but probably found the stats interesting because it's such an oddity when you have someone of Woody's size.

I actually got a chuckle and thought it was kind of interesting that JU will have more blocks in a season than a 7-1 guy will have in his career. Not really trying to bash (or praise, for that matter) anyone. Sorry to those that took it that way.
