How Can Iowa Fix Its Offense?

Drew Tate as QB coach. And then find a high octane OC from FCS or somewhere and let them have the reigns. Just really anything that will keep the defense off of the field for more than 2-3 minutes so they can stay fresh.
I actually wondered if Ricky Stanzi would ever be interested in coaching. He's prob had the most successful run as a professional for Iowa QB's in the recent pass, even though in the CFL.
The qualities that made both of those guys such good quarterbacks are qualities you can't teach or coach.

You mean Pick Rick?

Brad Banks might argue with you depending on what is recent. Actually CJ is probably the most successful.

Yep, pick Rick. That guy was a gamer and had the "it" factor. That guy won games. If all you remember is the pick sixes, you are missing something.

Yea his 3004 yrds passing, 64% completion rate, 25 TD's with 6 INT's in 2010 his senior season sure sucked. So did his passer rating of 157.6.

Can we order two of those please, with a side order of Brad Banks topped with Mark Vlasic and Chuck Long chaser to help wash it all down.

With you 100%. Stanzi threw picks because there wasn't a throw he didn't think he could make and was afraid to attempt. Sure he threw some picks but the guy was a gamer. I wish Petras, or any recent QB on the roster, had Stanzi's confidence, I realize it's not the Iowa way, but with every team I've ever coached I've made it clear that you can't play scared and have to take chances to figure out what your capable of.

Exactly. I honestly feel that KF and BF suppress their QB's to avoid the mistakes too much. They are micromanaging them so much, they are limiting their talent and what they could offer.

If might be better letting them play and living thru a couple TO's a game, especially with a stout D and punter who can change field position and pin teams. You can afford to take that chance on offense.

So, it may not be all on Petras or the QB's. We have seen it for too many years.

No, that was a joke. However, I doubt KF would remember the picks fondly.... and therefore...

I think this is especially true with QBs and point guards.

With every play, there is risk and reward. And on a play by play basis, often time the risk of a deep shot (for a QB) or a thread-the-needle pass (for a point guard) is not worth the immediate reward.

But it is not about a single play. If a QB is known to take deep shots, then his WR run better deep routes. And the defense plays back 1 step further, and attacks the run just a little more hesitantly. So the cumulative effect of having someone back there willing to take risks elevates the offense and weakens the defense.

There are lots of great PGs who averaged a pretty high TO number (e.g. Steve Nash), but the risk they were willing to accept opened up so much more than could ever be captured by a flashy highlight or two

Where do you start? It's too late to go back to January and do what should have been done with staffing changes and the transfer portal. The offensive strategy for the players on offense isn't working and it is too late to change strategy. Iowa needs to try a new face at Quarterback that can complete passes closer to 60% completion versus 50% . Until Iowa has a QB that can beat you with a pass nothing is going to work.

Stanzi wasn't afraid to take risks, that's why Kirk didn't love him like his other children.

Listening to Hester and Carpenter on ESPNU. Neither wants to even watch the IA/ISUgame. Hester mentioned that he watched the SDS game and knew what the play was going to be based on the formation about 95% of the time. They agreed the offense was a failure of playcalling, execution and creativity. Complete take down of the Iowa offense.
This is no longer some disgruntled Iowa fans, but a National joke. Got to kill recruiting.

Not sure anyone cares what Hester and Carpenter think. Is it Devin Hester? I don't even know who the hell they are.

Your first issues was watching ESPN.

I listen to ESPNU/Sirius in the car.
Virtually every personality on every show I listened to this week completely trashed the Iowa offensive performance, coaches and players. While it seems you feel ESPN and it's personalities may be unreputable, I would disagree.
My point is that there are a lot of recruits out there who are influenced by ESPN and the national media. It's one thing for our offensive impotence to be an intramural concern among Hawk fans, it's a significant concern for recruiting that our incompetence is now receiving nationwide ridicule.

That's just it. It has nothing to do with who the talking heads are, but rather that it's Iowa they're singling out. Last year the mentality was that Iowa was a pretender last year strictly because of the offense and could have been a contender with an offense. Now they're well beyond that and it's simply our offense is a joke. The fact is, regardless of what they think or their credentials, the it's not the attention we want at the national level. On our own boards where were super fans sure, but not outside the fanbase.

Same experience today on my way to Iowa City. They actually seemed to feel bad for Iowa. Said our D was 1st class and wasted due to O’s incompetence. Sad

Yea I know I get it. Hi ust trying to slam ESPN the SEC network when I can. You have valid points.

Exactly. Sometimes even an incomplete pass that stretches the field is important. Yea goal is to complete it, but if done a few times a game can keep defense off balance. If never done, advantage defense.
