I realize I'm real late on this...but the end of game clock management by VT was really bad. Combine that with Tyrod Taylor playing well for about 3.5 quarters before turning into a pumpkin and you get a BSU victory.
After VT gets a first down with about 2:20 left:
1) First down rushing play for 4 yards, clock stops at 2:10 (BSU 2nd timeout)
2) Second down rushing play for -3 yards (almost look like Taylor gave up), clock stops at 2:06 (BSU uses final timeout)
3) Third down PASSING play incomplete, CLOCK STOPS at 2:00.
Can someone tell me why the heck Beamer allowed a pass play to be called with Boise out of timeouts. Sure, you probably aren't going to get a first down, but not only do you milk the clock for the length of the play, but then you get the 40 second play clock, at which point you can call timeout, set up your punt team, and then you get the length of the punt play. So instead of giving BSU the ball with 1:45 left, you give it to them with under a minute. I realize BSU scored very quickly, and I'll never know whether or not VT's defensive strategy that last drive had anything to do with it.
Don't have a problem with the flag they picked up on the block in the back...VT needs to teach that guy to fall on his stomach. I thought every special teams coach taught that...the late hit was a terrible call, not that it mattered.
Taylor had a guy wide open on 3rd down on that final VT drive too...not sure who he was throwing too, but it was an extremely errant ball. His WR got behind the LB's but under the safeties and would have been a substantial gain. But given the BSU karma, the VT kicker probably would have missed another even if they did get into range.
Very frustrating ending, as I was in the group who wanted to see Boise go down...
