Horrible Officiating in this game, horrible down the stretch

Bad foul calls, plus 2 out of bounds calls they got wrong in the final 2 minutes. If these refs called the game correctly Iowa wins. There was also a huge disparity in the fouls being called. Way too few against Dayton, they were calling too many ticky tack fouls against Iowa. Just terrible officiating.

22 fouls on Iowa
21 fouls on Dayton

The officiating was consistently tight. Hard to blame these guys as that continues to be the point of emphasis but it took the flow from the game.

The one bad missed call was on Clemmons but other than that it wasn't a game with a lot of missed calls, just called too tight.

We're just a MUCH better team when Woody isn't on the floor. Sadly, we have to wait for his multiple fouls and bricked layups to actually get him off of the floor.
Are we really going to start up this bs debate again this year? Woodys defense and leadership is solid. 8 rebounds, 6 points in 23 minutes.

Just because the total foul count is almost identical doesn't mean the officials called a game fairly. Dayton shot 10 more free throws in the game and got every questionable call in the last few minutes when the game could've gone either way. I'm not saying the refs cost Iowa the game, Dayton is a solid team and made some big shots too. But the refs certainly didn't give Iowa much of a chance at the end and you can't deny that.

Some things never change. Lose a game and immediately start up the old "refs sucked" thread. Funny how refs are NEVER bad when we win.

Dayton outplayed Iowa. They were quicker, they out rebounded us, dominated us inside, and were much more aggressive.

I'm glad we have a team that can finally shoot. Man, we got us some snipers this year. But it's clear to me now that Woody is what he is. It's not bad, but it isn't enough. We need some kind of low post presence other than finger rolls and baby hooks. We got destroyed on the inside and it's only going to get worse when we get in B1G play.

I like this team and I never give up on Fran & company. I think they will get it figured out.

Dayton shot more FT's cause they attacked the rim. Same as Iowa used to do when Whitey was playing. It wasn't the refs being big mean cheaters.

There are plenty of times "don't blame the refs" guy comes on here and b!tches about people complaining about the refs when we won. It obviously bothers people more when a string on questionable calls goes against us at the end of games we lose, but bad officiating still gets called out in games we win.

Also basketball is a very game to game sport. We got crushed on the inside last night but we dominated inside in the Marquette game. We are going to have games where Woody gets in foul trouble and we can't do anything inside. But we will also have games like that where we win anyway because we shoot great from outside. I don't think we're a better team this year, but we have more ways to win than we did last year. Besides, the Big 10 kinda sucks this year so we should be fine.

Last year that center for the bad-gers got away with far more that Adam ever gets away with. It was the same way today. He gets called on more non fouls that anyone I have ever seen. He's a good player, the refs know it, but they just don't like him for whatever reason. It is never good, it bothers me more in close games like this though, and with so many bad calls coming in the last couple minutes.

Execution/transition on both ends of the court, Iowa forgot to play defense and rebound at times....we need to quit micro-managing what we see on the tv that the refs didn't see....you play w/heart and play hard on both ends, execute and the rest will take care of itself...

I was replying to the guy that said there was a huge disparity in the # of fouls called which isn't true.

As I said immedietly after the game, we are a soft them. Dayton shot more free throws because they were the more aggressive team.

The call on Sapp was wrong but we had our chances. Mike missing the front end of a 1-1 hurt and credit to Dayton... The executed down the stretch.

Never seen a 7 footer brick so many layups in my life. I'd have him all by himself in the corner of the gym, practicing layups for the duration of every practice!

I was at the game. Yes, officiating was poor--at least two out-of-bounds calls missed, and Dayton and their arm-bar/hand-check defense was largely ignored.

However, Dayton beat us at our own game., They played the transition better (both ways), had better ball movement and shot better. End of story.

You are correct. We won't shoot a lot of free throws this year as we are a jump shooting team. Uthoff and Mike both missing front ends of 1 and 1s in the end hurt us badly as well as the call on Clemmons.
I didn't think the officiating was very good, but we didn't play good enough defense and gave up too many open shots which was the big difference in the game. Not sure why Fran didn't call time out either to draw up a 3 point play. Would have preferred Uthoff get the look with his ability to shoot over people with his height.
On a positive note, we shot the 3 well again. If we continue to shoot the 3 well we can stay in a lot of games this year even against better teams.
I continue to be impressed with Ellingson too. I really felt Fran should have taken Jok out before free throws at the end of the game last night, switching offense for Defense. Jok is just too slow on defense and Baer or Ellingson would have been a better option on defense.

The point of the thread is the officiating was not the only reason Iowa lost. But, it was a big factor done the stretch. If the game was called correctly.....Iowa likely wins. However, Dayton is a good team and made enough plays to certainly win. Iowa's defense was soft not protecting the paint and slow to rotate out to shooters on the perimeter.

BTW, Woody already has two fouls and is out three minutes into the ND game. Such senior leadership.
