Hope Ferentz doesn't do what Pinkel did

Joe Paterno made a mistake, a big one. I still think Paterno did a lot for Penn State, a lot for college football. He stood for everything that is right when it comes to college football.

Joe Paterno also enabled a child molester. There's no getting around it. He will always be known for enabling a child molester. His name is greatly tarnished. He will also still be known as a football legend. His harboring a child molester doesn't totally erase his college football track record.

Joe Paterno is a football legend who harbored a child molester.

Hitler was a great leader who killed millions. His killing of millions does not mean he wasn't a great leader even if he was leading people down a path to destruction.

Google Vicky Triponey - you might get a different picture of what Joe Paterno stood for. But, I get what you are saying. I mean isn't that why they have that giant statue of Hitler in front of the Olympic stadium in Berlin?

Okay. Joe Paterno was a horrible person for not turning Sandusky over to the Police but this Vicky Triponey thing is really stupid. If this story came out and there had never been a cover up people would be saying, "really, who cares lady" So Joe liked to be able to punish kids the way he saw fit, so do most coaches. He was also from a different era where every public intox wasn't published in every news outlet and they handled everything internally. It is not like kids weren't punished for things, he just preferred that he be the one that did the punishing. Look at how mad you could tell Kirk was that the University was punishing Coker, you can't tell me he didn't try as hard as heck to let the football team take care of it.

Paterno did some horrible things but insisting that he punish his players wasn't one of them.

You don't get it do you? This just goes to show that Joe wanted to keep EVERYTHING in house. He didn't want the police to discipline his kids/coaches, he didn't want the university to discipline his players/coachers, and he didn't want anyone but Joe to decide what was the appropriate punishment for breaking the rules.

This is the crux of the problem for Joe. He wanted to make all these decision, or at least influence them as best he could. He didn't want the police notified, he didn't want the foundation notified, he didn't want anyone notified of what Sandusky was doing, or at least anyone notified that he knew he couldn't control.......so nobody outside the university was notified. Joe and his obsession to control everything is the reason that Sandusky could keep raping children.

There's an old joke about f-ng goats. You can be Joe the great doctor, lawyer, plumber, politician...but you F one goat, and you're Joe the GoatF'er. Period, full stop.

JoePa F'd the goat. That's who he is (was) now.

Graduation rates? Mythical national championships? Big Ten titles? I'm sorry, I can't hear those things above the BAAAAA BAAAAA BAAAAA

You guys can all sit there and pretend that what happened with Sandusky will be all that is ever talked about with JoePa, but you're mistaken. There are too many people that are apathetic to the situation. The same people criticizing me about pointing out that fact are the same ones whining in outrage in other threads about why Penn State can't get it right with the statue, whining about why public opinion polls aren't more decisively against JoePa and the list goes.

Keep peeing in the wind, but when this story is behind us there are many people in college football that will still talk about JoePa's coaching legacy at Penn State. This whole ordeal isn't going to magically make all that he did as a coach go away.

I don't know if it changes his win record, but it does change his legacy. JoePa went from being, all that is RIGHT about college football, to, all that is WRONG with college football, in a 24 hour period.

Um, TOTALLY WRONG.

A lifetime reputation can be crushed in a moment with a vile act.

That is exactly the case here.

Paterno won't be remembered for his wins. He's Chernobyl.

Exactly...regardless of if ncaa continues to recognize Paternos wins or not. The fans of today and going forward will always have this * next to him. Barry Bonds steroids... Pete Rose gambling.... Joe Paterno letting Sandusky do what he did for YEARS OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Or a 14 year period. Dude had a long time to right that wrong, but failed to do so for a decade and a half.

Agreed.

JoePa was very aware he was in a race with Bobby Bowden for the win record. He made sure nothing would stand in his way. Not even the well-being of youngsters.
