Honda Automotive Care

I found this video interesting. I am not claiming everything in this video is true, but people should know what their automobile owners manuals recommend.

One example I have been through with my Honda 2011 CRV. I bought the car new and have followed all the required maintenance.I haven’t had any issues other just basic maintenance. Some repairs and maintenance I can do myself. The car is approaching being 15 years old. Great car, with no issues. Currently have 111,000 miles on it. “Yeah I know that is very, very low mileage. We usually have three vehicles between me and my wife. Also came in handy when we had three teenagers at one point.

About a year ago an indicator light came on indicating an issue with a tire sensor. I took the car to a local Honda dealership. The told me the sensor would need to be replaced and quoted me a price of nearly $300 which included sales tax.

I decided to get a second opinion. I took my car over to the place where I buy my tires “Discount Tire”. They replaced the sensor for $50. That included the new sensor and labor. Huh???? WTF???? Have t had any issues with it since. I haven’t used that dealership for any more service to my car. That was the second example and the last straw with them.

I got another example for you. I bought a new 2015 Honda CRV. About three years into it the heated fan blower was acting up and was cutting out. We had less than a 1000 miles left on the warranty. Took the car into the same dealership mentioned above. They told us that the fan was fine and the fluctuating fan speed was normal.

I am thinking to myself “Look dumbass we have had this car since it was new and this is not normal. So we left the local Honda Dealership and took it to another Honda dealership about twenty miles away.

I expressed my concerns to this dealership. The service person came out to the car turned on the fan blower and promptly stated that the fan is going out. He then checked our vin number and said that we had less than two months or about 500 miles on the warranty. He said good thing you brought the car in. He said everything will be covered under warranty, parts and labor at no cost to you. Huh? WTF???

I am considering buying a new 2026 Honda CRV, but guess which dealership I will not be buying it at? It won’t be at the “WTF Dealership”

I have owned several new Pilots over the past 20+ years. Every time I trade, about every three years, I have about 100,000 on it. I get really good trade in, and don’t pay a lot over invoice. The last two I have purchased Honda’s extended warranty, to about 110,000 miles, for 50% off. I have has $0 major repairs. Big, roomy, comfortable, huge storage, now with all the bells and whistles. Will stay with them. Just me.

I agree. I have nothing against buying a new Honda, but will go out of my way a few miles to avoid buying from the dealership just three miles from my house. Will go to John Stockton Honda instead.

I love the power and roominess of the Pilot, just not the gas mileage. rumor has it that they are working on a hybrid.

They have it on the CRV. Granddaughter has and loves it.

I've owned several Hondas. Had an Odyssey with almost 200,000 my wife traded in for a Subaru Ascent to handle the winter in MN better but it was rock solid just burned a little oil but handles terrible in the snow. I had a 2006 Ridgeline with almost 250,000 that I decided to trade in as the body was failing me and my dad had some poor health and didn't want to have to risk having to try and replace any tires if I had to drive to FL as I did the rear brakes and had the jack point cave in on me from corosion from the MN winters. Engine was still running solid. Upgraded to a 2024 Ridgeline which I bought new. The dealership I used have been my go to dealer for over a decade and I feel fortunate for the relationship. They have always been fair and I didn't pay MSRP for the new truck so I was happy.

Dealerships absolutely suck. Most aren't interested in honoring any warranty and try to deflect. I had Sub Outback for 1 yr and the battery was acting up and draining. Didn't really even have enough power to run the windows, especially in winter. I also had the middle console get loose and was wobbling. Could literally rock it back and forth. I want to the Sub dealer in Cedar Rapids, Dave Wright Subaru. They would not replace the battery and would not fix my center console saying that was my fault and not a manufacturing issue. Said I prob hit it getting in and loosened the bolts. Whatever.

I went back up to where I bought the Outback new and they had no problem correcting the console. By this time I had already replaced the battery on my own dime. They were absolutely terrific. This was C&S in Waterloo. So, to say the least, the closer Dave Wright Subaru in CR lost my business for life. I'll bypass them and drive up the road another 60 mi. I've also gone to the Sub dealership in Dubuque avoiding Wright Subaru. Lost my business for a couple bolts to correct loose console.

And............I never had the console loosen up the rest of the life of that car.

I'm not afraid to mention the name of the dealership in these posts. If they are going to act like jackasses, It's deserving, IMO. It's not defamation when it's true.

Got another horror story with McGrath in Cedar Rapids but that can be for another day.

Once out of warranty, I've got my private auto mechanic I trust and is fair.

McGrath got me once, that was enough. Son bought a new Jeep that had a front wobble that they would not address. Said it was the wheels and tires he put on. He used the internet to prove there was a problem with Jeep, they then fixed it!

Ok. I had a recall on our kid hauling van years ago to check the front control arms secondary to rusting issues. My boys were prob 6-7 at the time so safety is always on the mind. The dealerships were supposed to inspect the control arms and replace if badly rusted. I took it up to McGrath & they put it on the lift. They came out and said that I was pretty lucky as it only showed surface rust and they cleaned it up and rustproofed it. Now, to those who don't know what the control arm is, it a key part of the suspensions that is the connection between the suspension and your front wheels. If they break going down the highway you can have catastrophic results and potential serious injury if not death. Your wheel just breaks and collapses or goes sideways at 65 mph.

Now I tinker in my own garage on stuff that I can handle, so know enough to be dangerous. A few months later I was changing my front sway bars on the van so in that general area. I took the tire off & inspected the parts I was going to replace. I look down and see a badly rusted control arm showing thru the spray rust proof they sprayed on the arm. In the middle of the are was literally a 2 X 2" hole that was rusted out and had jagged edges. The entire integrity of that tire was on the thin edges of solid material that was left on the control arm. I was flabbergasted. So, I took a couple pics with my phone.

I was at work and I get a random spam marketing email from McGrath saying they really need used vehicles, nothing related to my issues. I bounce the email back with the pics blasting them with my thoughts and how they were willing to put my family at risk driving this van with the rusted control arm. It was bad and I'm not exaggerating about the size of the hole. They emailed me back in a matter of 15 minutes asking me to come up to the dealership that afternoon ASAP. I don't know how they did it, but they found two control arms for that van in a matter of a couple hours and changed them that afternoon.

I will never forget this.
