Hoiberg has contacted Horner about GA position!

I listened to Fred Hoiberg on KFAN today in Minneapolis. He was very impressive. I didn't know this but Jeff Grayer is on the ISU staff as well, Mac hired him before he left and started 2 weeks ago, Fred says he will remain on the staff. Mentioned that he interviewed for the position when it was open 4 years ago. Said that this is his "Dream Job" and has been preparing for this opportunity for quite sometime and has been working on building contact base when it comes to recruiting.

As for the type of offense he wants to run. Says uptempo and push the ball.

Would Jeff really turn his back on Iowa and take that offer?

Jeff wants to be a coach and if Fran isn't in any hurry to hire his staff then Jeff has to do what is best for him. If Hoiberg is going to give him his start he would probably take it. Dan Gable wrestled at ISU but became a legendary coach at Iowa so it isn't like it would be inconceivable. This would be a huge miss on Fran's part and ISU would have a young staff to relate to the recruits a little better. Now if Fran can get Rodell Davis or Greg Lansing and maybe a younger GA then all is well.

We all know the future of all basketball programs depend on 1 of 2 two year temporary graduate assistant. If Jeff gets an opportunity good for him. Stop trolling.

Wouldn't that be the final spot on Hoibergs staff, and isn't the general consensus that Hoiberg needs to fill that spot with someone who actually has, ya know....some experience?

Not saying it's inconceivable...but I don't think Clone fans get the warm fuzzies for Dan Gable anymore, like us Hawk fans do.

If Jeff thinks that it is best for him to hitch his wagon to what amounts to the Bart Starr of college basketball, then he is not as smart as I give him credit for. For all of the hoopla around Hoibergs hire, clown fans seem to forget that it will be the likes of Kansas and Texas, K State, and the newest big kid on the block Baylor that they will have to contend with regularly. Not Iowa. We play one game a year, yet Clown fans are crowing about beating us out of in state recruits and now about the possibility of Horner joining their ill fated journey. Hoiberg will be taken to the woodshed by the rest of the Big 12. His inexperience in coaching will stand out like a supernova. This is no wading pool, Hoiberg will find himself in the deep end in shark infested waters, and while he claims to have learned alot by watching other coaches, I have watched men fly to the moon...but that doesn't qualify me as an astronaut. The Big 12 is not a training ground, and Hoiberg and company will find out it's not as easy as it looks.

Be smart Jeff, the first bus to come along is not necessarily the right one.

Horner's not going to be an assistant; rather a GA. Grayer will most likely be director of basketball operations. There are spots for two assistants yet, I am guessing.

Dear God, it's a GA position. He's not hitching his wagon to anybody. Fred would still hire 2 more assistants.

Exactly - this doesnt matter at all

I couldnt agree more, Hoiberg is going to wear out his welcome in ames, Im going to put that out there
;)

Like it or not, Iowa and ISU are going to battle out for recruits in this area despite only playing each other once a year. I think we can agree that there are quite a few nice in-state kids coming up the next three years. How Freddy can recruit will determine his stay. I believe college basketball is the one sport you can succeed in without coaching experience. Its all about the players. Look at your situation - you hired the National Coach of the Year and how did that work out.

I think we all know how Lick turned out. But to say that college basketball is the one sport without coaching experience is a reach and your only saying that because your a Cyclone and you like Freddy. Sure it's nice to have good to great players but there has to be a coach there or your going to have players on 5 different pages. I'm sure Freddy will be able to coach a practice and get the players to buy into what he is selling but game experience as a HC is a totally different animal. It would be in Fred's best interest to hire a right hand man that has coaching experience or he might get eaten alive. As far as Horner becoming a GA at ISU it isn't that big of a role but it could lead to a recruiting edge in their favor. I wouldn't blame Jeff if he did take the job just to get his foot in the door and get started in coaching college ball.

Looking at this years final four (Izzo, Krzyzweski, Huggins)...pretty solid experience. Granted Brad Stevens may be the outlier but I feel he is an up and comer. If you are going to get anywhere in the top half of your conference you are going to need a little experience. - back to Jeff....if he gets the opportunity he needs to take it for his own well being.

Frank Martin is a glorified AAU coach. So take that for what it's worth. College BB today is about 80% recruiting. 10%keeping the players happy once their there. And 10% actual coaching.

The old adage is that college is a coaches game, and the NBA is a players game.
I think that is still true, but you do have to have a basic talent level to compete.
However, there is no way that ISU will match the talent of KU,KSU,OkSt.,Ok,Texas,Baylor or Texas A & M in most years,so then it is a coaches game...beat the better talent.

Fran will face the same talent disparity vs MSU,PU,Ill,and OSU....but for sheer talent, the Big 12 is no picnic.

As for Jeff, hey, if Fran wants to pass ,then I have no problem with Jeff going to ISU.
It is one game a year, and when it comes to instate talent, Iowa is still the Hawkeye State, we will do fine. Iowa is in the Big Ten,which is the most powerful, high profile league in college sports as we all can see with the BTN and expansion talk. ISU could easily end up on a northern island surrrounded by a sea of Big ten schools...disconnected and ignored by a conference dominated by KU and OK and Texas schools..the Hawks will hold their own.

Hoiberg also landed his first recruit the other day to, a pretty good one from what I heard to. How many has Fran landed so far? I don't think he will wear out his welcome in Ames any faster than Fran will in IC.
