Hoiberg has contacted Horner about GA position!

I think you underestimate the importance of experience, but I do agree that a coaches ability to recruit good players is very important. Brad Stevens spent 7 yrs as an assistant and he has probably studied more game tape during that time than Hoiberg has in 10 yrs of playing in the NBA. (I think Stevens started as the video coordinator breaking down opponents schemes)

You can have all the talent in the world, but a coach has to get the most out of that talent to win. If what you say was true a guy like Wayne Morgan would still be coaching somewhere today. Tracy Webster would have been snatched up by a school by now.

True. However it's not like Fred hasn't watched plenty of tape in his life. I could watch tape for a year and it wouldn't make a difference because I'm an idiot when it comes to that stuff.

We had a player from the 90s under Orr post on our board recently that the teams he was on basically ran one play, the Wheel, and they ran the crap out of it. ISU retained TJ Otz to help recruit and they'll be bringing in an old hand to help with the X's and O's. I'm not saying this is a sure thing and far from it but I think Fred is acutely aware of his shortcomings and is addressing that on his staff.

I was just pointing out the fact that Brad Stevens had quite a few years in a couple of different positions at Butler prior to becoming head coach. ISU fans want to throw his name out there as having no experience just because he is young, but that's not the case at all.

I think Fred is capable of being a good coach and keeping Otz was huge for the clones. As for the wheel, the game has changed a lot in the past couple of decades. Schemes are much more sophisticated now then they were in the early '90's. Matchup zones, etc were very rare back then but now some teams run that as their base defense (Syracuse).

I'm not sure how many guys have been named Div I coaches without having coaching experience, but I'm willing to be the success rate is not that high. (Clyde is the only one I can think of off the top of my head) Everything Clyde learned in his NBA years did not prepare him for his first coaching gig.

I agree. I've only seen a few Stevens references and none on our board but I agree it makes no sense. IMO Clone fans would be better served just saying that his lack of experience is a huge concern and leave it at that. It is a concern. Do I think it prohibits his ability to win? No, I really don't. I think the first probably 2 years will be rough though, but that would have happened with anybody. In this case the first two years will be fun at Hilton though and for now that's good enough for me.

Tim Floyd ran tons of junk defenses when Fred played for him. It was part of Floyd's strategy. I really don't think offenses are any more difficult to prepare for now than they were 20 years ago. In fact I'm pretty sure they aren't.

This. FM needs to put together the best staff he can for the job he needs to do, based on his vision of how best to accomplish that.

We talking bout Grad Assistants? We ain't talking about associate head coaches, we talking about GA's. GA's are not part of a "vision" when it comes to running a program. They are hired to help them get experience because they don't have any. 99% of them are 23-24 years old. Its not about vision, its about helping guys get into the coaching profession.

Agreed, like the AI reference.
