HN TV: McCaffery on Redshirts, Starting 5, More

Thanks Rob!

Sounds like the PG battle is up for grabs. Interesting, could mean Jordan is pretty good, or they are both pretty average.

Fran said Baer is making a push to start. I'm sticking with my guess for now of:
CW, Jok, Cook, Wagner, Uhl

Sounds like Jones has been battling new injuries. Could mean some opportunities for Pemsl or Kreiner. I think Dailey redshirts.

Pumped for the season to start to watch this group!

Bohannon must be doing pretty good. I guess he won't redshirt, but I don't think he will start over Williams. Fran always puts out positives. I'm looking forward to seeing what Iowa can do with the added muscle this year. Woodbury was tough, but they were pretty thin last year.

Kreiner is the best rebounder regularly? Is that good or bad? So much unknown.

I believe this is a good thing. We certainly need beasts inside to counter being bullied inside. Kreiner and Pemsl are bruisers and apparently love contact. Wadley and Uhl can bang around also. We were mugged to death the latter half of the B1G season last year. This year we establish presence in the middle. We know Ahmad can handle himself around the basket. He just might be the leading rebounder this season. Cook should be there also.

Getting excited for the season to begin. Coming soon.....

Jordan getting into the groove quickly will benefit the team tremendously. If his three point proficiency develops, we will be difficult to stop. Finally we have a Bohannan on the team. About time.....

My guess, and yes it is only a guess as I have yet to see most of these kids play:

Williams
Jok
Baer
Cook
Kreiner/Wagner

This is how I see it. Williams, Jok, Uhl, and Cook as for sure starters and then Wagner/Baer fighting for the last starting spot. All 6 will play a lot. Moss and Ellingson will backup the wings, and Bohannon will backup the 1. Kreiner or Pemsl will factor in down low off the bench with Dale Jones while the other one takes a red shirt with Dailey.

Some more predictions:

I don't expect much out of Moss or Jones this year. I just don't see it with one still being way behind and the other coming off injury.

Big Surprise this year will be Kriener.

2 RS candidates are Dailey and Pemsl.

How could he be way behind when he's had a whole year in the program and was supposed to be our best recruit in the class? If he doesn't play this year I'm guessing he will never be much of a contributor

I'm usually reading the boards in bed and can't get any volume. Any summary of what was said, along with an opinion or three??

I have not read anything on Moss. Very little anyhow. I was hoping for much more talk on him.

Fran mentioned a little bit on him in that segment, said he scores the basketball, always has. I was hoping we'd here more from him as well, but maybe he's just flying under the radar. Most of the talk this offseason has been about Cook, Jok, The PGs, and Baer.

If Jones is healthy he will play. There is no way you can keep a guy that size with that kind of shooting ability off the court. Fran did sound a little frustrated with the new injuries, but said he will be a factor this year.

The fact that Fran hasn't been over-flowing in his praise of Moss lately makes me wonder what his future is going to be here.

Pemsl looked really good finishing at the rim in ptl highlights. For some reason, guys from Iowa have a hard time finishing at the rim. For as long as I can remember it's missed layup after missed layup. Pemsl looks like he is always under control with both hands.

It's going to be a little awkward next year when 2 more forwards/centers step on campus if Pemsl & Kreiner are really excelling right now.

True. Just heard Andrew Francis on the On Iowa podcast, and when asked who will be starting next week, he dodged the question a bit but threw out about 7 names. Pemsl was maybe the 5th name mentioned. It kind of surprised me that he mentioned him so early. Also Baer was not one of the names but when discussed later it sounded like he was in the mix.

Baer is too valuable off the bench to start...IMHO...

Not many players can play great off the bench...

I never quite understood the - to valuable off the bench thing. If you are starting a guy that is worse than Baer, how does that make sense? We lose productivity on the opening tip for 3 or so minutes, just to get the spark we could have had at the beginning of the game??

Tom Kakert said this on a podcast once with Kenyon Murray. You could feel Kenyon shaking his head through the speakers... If the guy is a starter, you start him. You that energy from the opening tip.

The past four years Fran has defended the line, it does not matter who starts, it is the minutes. While some of that BS is partially true, we all know if was to protect Woody and his guaranteed starting job. And I am good with that recruiting strategy. But Gabe most certainly should have been the starter in 2013 & 2014. More than what he received anyhow. He got one. Gabe out of the blocks would have altered some games from the beginning. Not 3 or 4 minutes later after we are behind.

If Cook got this type of offer, I am all good with that! I am good with that to get 4+ star players. Although, from what I have watched, I do not see anyone beating him out. He is going to be a great one.
