HN TV: McCaffery on Redshirts, Starting 5, More

I never quite understood the - to valuable off the bench thing. If you are starting a guy that is worse than Baer, how does that make sense? We lose productivity on the opening tip for 3 or so minutes, just to get the spark we could have had at the beginning of the game??

Tom Kakert said this on a podcast once with Kenyon Murray. You could feel Kenyon shaking his head through the speakers... If the guy is a starter, you start him. You that energy from the opening tip.

The past four years Fran has defended the line, it does not matter who starts, it is the minutes. While some of that BS is partially true, we all know if was to protect Woody and his guaranteed starting job. And I am good with that recruiting strategy. But Gabe most certainly should have been the starter in 2013 & 2014. More than what he received anyhow. He got one. Gabe out of the blocks would have altered some games from the beginning. Not 3 or 4 minutes later after we are behind.

If Cook got this type of offer, I am all good with that! I am good with that to get 4+ star players. Although, from what I have watched, I do not see anyone beating him out. He is going to be a great one.
It probably would matter who got the most minutes. If Fran uses as many players he says he plans on using, the different combinations could make a difference. I think the five best players will probably start no matter what the coaches say. Baer is a good player, and he gives Iowa a spark, but I don't think he is probably one of the five best basketball players on the Iowa squad.

Who is better? I will say for certain, Jok & Cook. Other than that, I do not see anyone that is head & shoulders better than Baer... Nobody is obvious, At the moment. That could very well change in the next two weeks when we see more of what we have. But right now, no.

Curious, who do you have as the next 3+ players that are better than Baer???

I had previously predicted Moss to start but I would change my prediction at this point:

Williams
Jok
Baer
Cook
Uhl

Off the Bench: Jones, Wagner, Moss, and Bohannon

I think it depends upon the player...his attitude...his ability to start fast out of the blocks...his stamina...I think lots of players don't make high quality 6th player options...Baer seems to be adept at it.

Cook, Wagner, Baer, Jok, Williams...Uhl can't play the 4 effectively from a defense and rebounding standpoint so I'd rather see him as the 6th man or at the 3 with Baer as 6th man. Wagner can bang down low. He may be somewhat limited offensively, but I trust him down there a lot more.

Baer should be starting, but some players play better off the bench, which is a valuable thing. Lot of pressure starting, have to make an immediate impact on the court, home and away. Some like coming in, fresh off the bench, having analyzed the game and knowing what to do right away.....

Nicholas has been more than beneficial coming off the bench. I was at Wells Fargo last season and we would have lost against Drake without Baer coming off the bench and providing energy and much needed points.....

Baer might be the third best scoring option on the team, behind Jok and Cook.....
