Per Wikipedia Troll (Internet) defined...

A troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a news group, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.


Two things...First - Unfortunately, this site is overrun with trolls. Think arguments, upsetting, inflammatory and provoking.

Second - Some of the trolls on this site are Hawkeye fans or have convinced us they are Hawkeyes fans. By no means am I suggesting every person with a differing opinion is a troll. But those individuals that do nothing but pick fights and try to provoke others are trolls.

Anyone want to wager as to how many trolls will weigh in with an opinion on this? Go Hawks!

Thirdly: people who can't debate and can only call people names because they don't agree with you, that isn't a troll. If a person can't handle debate or someone disagreeing with someone that isn't my problem. I have my views and if you can't handle that, than that's your issue not mine. It's called a message board and I know my views don't align with all and that's fine.

I've been posting on HN for Since 2003 and NEVER been called a troll until last night, by you!!

Well, see the two posts following yours and you are two for two. These two posters never have anything good to say about the Hawks. But, I guess that is their right, as it is yours to call them out.

As I have written hundreds of times, and very few people take me up on this, send me an email with a link to an offending post (the link in the upper right hand corner of the specific thread that shows a number, not the main thread) and I will look at it. If you don't send an email when you spot a troll (and I am not going to read every post, never have and never will), then please don't participate in posts like this.

People aren't going to do this unless it is over the top egregious behavior. Nobody wants to be a rat.

It is on the owner of a business to set standards of client/participant/consumer that they want and or desire. It isn't upon other consumers to police other consumers behavior. That would be like telling the patrons of a coffee shop that THEY need to do something about the bum that harasses them when they are just trying to enjoy some coffee. Everyone's standard of a troll is different, but to be blunt about it, the only person's opinion that matters on this is yours, as only you have the power to ban. I can only assume then that you feel that things that Fairfax and ForeverIowan do around here are ok, since you don't seem to notice, and or do anything about it.

I agree that there are going to be trolls on every forum, but with all due respect there seems to be an inordinate amount here compared to the hawkeye sites from the past. I guess I don't take the time to report them but they are not hard to spot. I'm sure I'll get a snarky comment back but it is true and this from someone who has been on these sites from the beginning as well as lots of other sites to compare to. Just a quick glance at post histories makes it pretty obvious for a few of these trolls. Maybe they have been around forever and are just crappy about masking it now.

1. The positive posters group that never ever venture off that platform of staying positive.

2. the group that post the opposite way to #1 and never says anything positive.

3 the down the middle group who post a mixture of both positive and negative depending on the ebb n flow of what's happening with said sport at the time. The can be right and or wrong with its view buts it the way they see it. However if they are wrong they are sure to here about it. the Majority of posters will fall into this group.


In the end the down the middle (the majority) offends everyone, because the call it like they see it.

If you are optimistic when everyone else is pesimistic, that isn't a troll, and vice versa. Trolls are ForeverIowan and Fairfax. They aren't here to discuss anything, they just come around to flame away, and then run away.

I think it's pretty easy to watch the iowa gonzaga game and come to the conclusion that iowa would lose to gonzaga every time they played them. I think that conclusion is wrong, but it doesn't make you a troll. Fairfax and foreveriowan are trolls.
