Hlas: Athletic Departments Needs to Reassess Things (Hoops Related)

Yeah, but does the U get it?

As I wrote the other day, I think they must get it now, that even though MBB is not the bell cow financially that football is, there is still widespread passion for it and it can also in turn be as big of a pain in the butt if its not taken care of properly, as we are seeing. And this would be on Bowlsby's ledger, IMO

When I think about a 43 million dollar practice facility, I think that we could have built a whole new arena for not a ton more. I think Mizzou arena only cost them in the 70's to build.

I agree wholeheartedly with Hlas on this one. I have been posting this for awhile as well. There has been more wrong with the Iowa bball program than the coach. I think rawkhawk's post earlier today the the Iowa fanbase has an overinflated opinion of the Hawk bball program touches on this as well. We all may believe that the Iowa bball HC job is prestigous, but that is not the outsider's perception. I think we have a tremendous opportunity to sell to the new coach coming in, and Barta will have to do just that.

I have thought for a long time that Iowa really missed an opportunity to capitalize on it's bball success during the 80s by not investing more resources back into the program. The Iowa Men's BBall program has been neglected for a long time... not just the past decade, more like 2 decades (if not more) and it caught up to us.

I was in favor of not renewing Mr. Davis's contract in 1998, but have come to really appreciate what he was able to accomplish.

I went to a Nebraska basketball game in 2009 and while the game sucked like many in the Lick era, the entertainment in the arena was better than Carver. When I got back to work, I shot a note to Barta commenting that when the Huskers who give two sharts about hoops have better entertainment than Iowa, we have a problem. Gary responded and said things would change this year. Well guess what, they didn't. It's still 1988 in Iowa City. They need to clean out more than Lickliter in the Athletic Dept.

Isnt making the move with Lickliter the first in the process of change? Now, it would seem the investment in personnel in the operations/marketing would be next. How long have the same people ben in charge, and does that account for the stale approach to gametime and all?

You would think so, but I think some folks in IC are so set in their ways it's as if they've never been to a game anywhere else.

entertainment...did you say entertainment?? we talkin' about entertainment?? you know you suck when you want entertainment at a basketball game.

great article by Hlas but he left one thing out:

Barta can tell the Iowa women's gymnastics coach they get ONE meet in Carver.

Having the basketball team have to practice off campus because Carver is being used for gymnastics is a joke.

I think I heard that the boat house was built using private funds...you can't hardly take a private donation that is made for a specific purpose and redirect the funds.

I'll agree that the renovations at CHA are long overdue.
