History vs. FM's record @ IA

What do the numbers say and does it mean anything?

I have decided to not count FM's first year in this snapshot since he stepped into such a steaming pile.

To date and since 1942 Iowa's overall win % is .611 and Big10 win % is .570

FM's overall win % is .611 as well and Big10 win % is .549

Overall FM is right on pace with history but down in Big10 play. However since his tenure began he has matched or beat the previous year's Big10 finish. Of course that's not happening this year.

Is it true that we are who we are as the historical records suggest?

And is FM's record in Big10 play vs. history a result of PG play?

Probably and probably.

Fran had to rebuild a program from the worst Iowa basketball has been in my lifetime and he had to do it during a stretch that was some of the deepest years of the Big10 so his conference record is down.

Iowa frankly, eh-hem, needed a fiery, us vs. the world personality after the look-at-me and then the lichtoast personalities.

he can recruit and coach.

Fran is at least a Tom Davis level coach. I think the next few years will be telling if he is equal to, or better than, Mr. Davis.

I think the numbers put Fran in pretty average territory as far as coaches at Iowa go- not great but not bad either. In my mind he has an offbeat coaching style that leads to rather uneven results. I agree with the above comment that the next few years will determine his legacy and in my mind the jury remains out. We need some help at guard especially if Connor concentrates on baseball rather than devoting himself full time to basketball.

Disagree with that. Davis made an Elite 8 and two Sweet 16's. Fran will probably never make It past the second round because he can't recruit well enough

He terribly needs an all big ten type point guard to can set up shooters like bohannon and ellingson, drive and dish to the active players inside.

There is a good chance Jok will be his 4th 1st team Big 10 player. Once Weiscamp is here, we will have a team that's pretty full of high ranked recruits. He recruits pretty good actually.

Pops Harrison won 70% of his games while at Iowa.
Bucky O'Connor won 65.9% of his games while at Iowa.
Tom Davis won 65.8% of his games while at Iowa.
Ralph Miller won 65.1% of his games while at Iowa.
Lute won 63.9% of his games while at Iowa.
Steve Alford won 58.9% of his games while at Iowa.
George Raveling won 58.7% of his games while at Iowa.
Fran has won 57.1% of his games while at Iowa.
Sharm Scheuerman 51.1% of his games while at Iowa.
Dick Schultz won 42.7% of his games while at Iowa.
Todd Lickliter won 39.6% of his games while at Iowa, but won 68.2% of his games while at Butler

So he didn't recruit well in 2014 and 2015

It obviously could have been better. But I'm more concerned with his last 2 classes which look really good. Not to mention locking up Weiscamp the following year.

I do wonder what Tre Dickerson would look like now had he stuck around.

This is a fair assessment I suppose. If you take a look at FM's last 4+ years, including the down year this year, Fran is 103-62 (62.2%) and 48-38 in the B1G (55%). I tend to think those numbers will continue to climb over the next 3 years.

They were terrible. No reason to sugar coat it

Two of those three years you mentioned Mr. Davis did it with Raveling's players, who were the most gifted players we've had in recent memory. Contrast that with the least-gifted players in recent memory that Fran inherited and you can see how it's an unfair comparison.

Mr. Davis did have the sentimental run to the Sweet 16 in his 13th and last season, but then Fran has only been here about half as much time as Mr. Davis was here so there's still time to at least match that.

If Moss ends up really good, Wagner pretty good, and Williams decent (all ifs but they do have 2 more years) you can't call that a terrible class. It does still have the option to end up terrible tho.
