Hilliard Chooses Ohio State

It's not much of a surprise, but it's to the point where I don't even want to be in these guys top 5 anymore. It's the same movie over and over and over.

The only silver lining I can think of is how highly he spoke of Iowa throughout. Hopefully, other recruits w/out offers from THE ohio st. will hear some of those things.

and also pick O$U over us! We could almost be the best class in the nation but actually end up at the 35 range

This. How many time do we have to hear a recruit say how comfortable they feel at Iowa, how great the coaches are, how nice the facilities are, and how they feel at home, to then have them pick another school. Just frustrating to lose out most of the time to the top ranked kids.

I think we're supposed to be happy and remind everyone that we are in the top x number of choices for these good recruits. I think that's the game plan.

It is a self-perpetuating cycle. Top players pick blue-blood programs that have historically won, are on TV, and talked about on ESPN. Blue-blood programs are blue-blood because they get top players.

It is very hard to become a "blue blood"---especially if you are not located in a talent rich geography. Winning at a high-level for a few years doesn't make you blue blood (See Iowa, Wisconsin, VT. Tech, Boise St., Mizzou, Maryland, among others).

Iowa recruiting just got friend zoned.

Some players just want to be a number and be buried on the depth chart their entire college career. Hard to blame them.

Says Gessel, Woody, Flemming, and Hutton

Fleming & Hutton are 3* recruits.. Not a lot of blue blood programs were after them yet. Woody was an in-state recruit who grew up a Hawkeye fan, and Gesell is basically local (S. Sioux City is just on the other side of the Missouri river, but practically is Iowa). Show me a highly rated recruit that was not local, that Iowa has gotten to commit. Not that we can't have success with the players we're getting, but all we seem to get is under the radar guys, or in-state players.

Look, I want our coaches to go after some of the top talent. You can't win if you don't play. But finishing 2nd is the same as finishing last when it comes to recruiting. You either get the kid to play for you, or you don't. There's no silver medal here.

.........and James Daniels could be the next in the brotherly combos to leave Iowa at the doorstep.

Whatever Iowa has that keeps them in contention for some of these more noted prospects for longer periods of time apparently isn't enough to sway them away from the potential to win big and to win consistently. Iowa hasn't shown well in that element of the equation as of late.

It's about winning, and beating top teams....That's what Cap't Kirk needs to do....have we been close? yes, have we played those teams tough? yes...But, did we win?..no, that's why we'll be in 2nd place all day long....it's the same old broken record

I agree. I don't mean my previous post to sound too overly critical.. I've been pretty pleased with Fran & KF over the years, and I also realize that Iowa's hoops program still isn't exactly a household name yet. How many people really payed attention to our "first round" game last year? Or the NIT run the previous year? Iowa needs to prove that it has a strong basketball program... NIT's and play-in game losses aren't quite enough. Just my opinion.

Fran has what it takes to get these kids to visit.. I'm just not sure what is stopping them from committing. Yeah, I get that we won't get them all, but the percentage of kids to visit and NOT commit seems especially high. But maybe it's like that for everyone (besides Kentucky, Duke, etc.)..

We're only a season away from a really bad 4-8. These "blue chippers" want to win. Add another couple really good years on top of last year and we'll get these type of recruits. For now, I'm not surprised at all... I'm also not that disappointed.

We haven't gotten "these type of recruits" in 14 years under Ferentz. He plays the Moneyball game with recruiting and quite frankly, I'm happy with 8 win seasons with an occasional 10 win season thrown in considering what type of talent we have. I appreciate it more than I have in the past. It's just reality of who we are.

I get a little concerned thinking about who replaces Kirk when that time comes because if they don't develop the players and use the "Moneyball" approach to recruiting then we are going to a bottom feeder unless we get a elite recruiter/salesman (anti-Kirk) as a head coach. But that is way down the road. Just focusing on what we have now, enjoy what we do have at Iowa.
