High School Playoffs

I grew up in Hampton.....Britt was relatively close to us, and so was Grundy Center. Those two have been on a collision course all year and are set to repeat last year's championship game.

In 1973, Britt had an all stater on their championship team named Bob Sweers. This was when only four teams made the playoffs from the then four-class system.

Also, during that time, Britt was a powerhouse wrestling school....John and Brent Hagen, Cliff Howlett (he ended up coaching in Hampton), Mark Stevenson among others ran amuck for several years in Des Moines. Bob Steenlage was Iowa's first 4-time state champ. Britt has had 31 state champs.
Back then there were some unbeaten not in the playoffs.

In the late '90's and early 2000's a school in the area where I used to teach/coach lost to the same powerhouse 3 years in a row, which put them at 7-2, 8-1, and 8-1 and they didn't make the playoffs any of those years. They were pretty unlikable so I didn't feel too bad for them.

What are your thoughts on the expanded playoffs in 8 Man through 2A where shitty teams now get a token invitation to get beat 77-3 by the 1 seed and claim that they "made the playoffs?"

You can probably guess my thoughts.

Case in point: Iowa Falls-Alden somehow made the 2A playoffs @ 2-6 and promptly got hammered by Central Lyon 57-0.

I don't see a reason for it. The kids think it's pretty neat to get to say they get to go to the playoffs until they realize that all it is is an embarrassment when they get a beatdown and realize that they shouldn't actually be in the playoffs. I remember when making the playoffs were only for the best and teams would celebrate after they qualified. There's nothing special about it because it's so watered down.

I support having 7 districts, take the top 2 in each district and have 2 wild cards. I personally would hate to see a 3-way tie where an 8-1 team gets left out because of a close loss to the district champ. I've been on the right side of that twice and the wrong side of it once. 8-1 felt like a waste of hard work for the kids and I really felt bad for them. I was also part of a team that went 4-5 and went to the playoffs. Talk about an anti-climactic week with no excitement, knowing we were going to travel an hour and a half to lose by 40.

I would like to add, though, that I am 100% in favor of every team making the playoffs in the parochial school class.

They made it because they expanded the field. the 1 seed vs 4 seed game is almost always a slaughter and I can't remember a 4 seed that's ever won a game since they expanded.

This year's round of 32 scoring differential, 1 seed vs. 4 seed (8 man is 1 vs 3)

2A - 367-70

1A - 387-49

A - 359-111

8M - 442-212

This is a huge, important point.

Our kids thought it was awesome 2 years ago. Now it's a big joke among players because they got a dose of reality that year and realize they're just being led to an embarrassing beatdown to get the IAHSAA more money. It creates a loser mentality.

...and fired their coach the next week.

I didn't know that. Hampton and Iowa Falls were "old" football rivals in the North Central Conference (Hampton, Iowa Falls, Clarion, Eagle Grove, Clear Lake, Algona, Humboldt, Webster City).

I told a parent and friend of mine once what I thought about football playoff expansion, and he said to me, "But you coach baseball, and everyone makes the playoffs." But...in baseball we aren't hyping the whole thing up by making it a "qualifying" situation where we convince kids and coaches that they did something to earn that spot. If you have a losing record you should absolutely not be playing post season football, and playing in a token game where you're going to get your ass handed to you doesn't do anything positive.

And for the record I'd be fine with a smaller baseball playoff.

Everyone who hasn't been part of the system thinks the IHSAA is some big state-funded and regulated organization looking to do what's best for the kids.

Lemme educate ya... :)

The IHSAA has no connection to the state of Iowa whatsoever. It's a privately funded "non-profit" made up of 14 people total in a little office building. Yes, 14 people including secretarial and support staff. There are four secretaries, a "print specialist" who's in charge of their print publications and trophies/plaques, and exactly 3 "assistant directors" who each have 3-4 sports they're responsible for administering. But they think they can manage tens of thousands of kids and coaching staff and thousands of games and matches effectively...

They have ONE person in charge of every official in the state. Lewie Curtis. One guy in charge of every boys baseball, basketball, football, wrestling, swimming, track and field, cross country, soccer, bowling, and golf official in the entire state of Iowa. He's a good guy, btw. Nothing personal against Lewie.

The IHSAA is the ONLY school sports governing body in the nation that's not funded and regulated by the state and taxpayers. It has no oversight, and answers to no one. It's a little mafia in Boone that does whatever the hell it wants and tries to make as much money as possible for salary.

No part of the IHSAA is overseen by anyone whatsoever. It has a token board of directors but that's just a puppet requirement for a non-profit and they go along with every decision no questions asked. The IHSAA has various committees made up of Iowa school superintendents, but guess who the chairpersons are of every single committee? Yep. The 3 assistant directors I mentioned earlier. They do what they want and what's best for their financial statements. Hence, expanded 8M through 2A playoffs.

Is River Valley 8 man now? Quimby Washta Correctionville and Cushing make up River Valley the last I knew. When I grew up they were 1A then just A. At different times they consolidated with Galva Holstein I think but that was like in the 90s. We were never any good maybe a couple decent seasons here and there but never sniffed state I don't think. I get the feeling they went down to 8 man but it's been years since I've kept up with it.

They *do* have a fairly-functional website which is somewhat useful.
Do they run the "free" streaming for the playoffs?

That sure came in from left field...

Fry how does St Nary s put thing together?

I think their opponent had the state leader in interceptions have a major knee injury against NF

Meh...part of the discussion was about how the expanded playoffs are bogus, and the IAHSAA is solely responsible for it being such a sham. And most people don't know what's behind the athletic association curtains. They purposely try to come off as a big state organization and it couldn't be further from the truth.
