Hey, Kirk was on the Dan Patrick Show today

Kirk has always come across as a pleasant interview when it's with regional or national media.

It's with the local writers or beat writers that he can occasionally be smug or guarded.

That was good to see. Kirk looks very comfortable with that new technology. Some good comebacks to Patrick.

that's because the local guys are a bunch of short, fat & un-athletic group of twerps who think they know more about sports than everyone else.

Guarded? Yes, at times. Smug? I think that is a label that was laid on him in the past (and to some extent, for good reason, although I saw it more as him being a smart ass, but it's not worth the debate to argue the distinction), but is not true today. But it's hard to shake labels.

I think he's more guarded with the local media because they are (we are) far more invested and knowledgeable about the details of the program - the history, the conference, the rivalries, the coaches, the players, everything - than the national media is, who fly at a higher altitude in their interviews with him. So, it's easier to be more "open" when you're talking about big topics. In local interviews, it's his tendency to not give away much about the players, about the upcoming games, about strategies that they see working or not working, about specifics on what they're working on to improve the team, all the details we're thirsty for (and care about) that just won't be revealed in any substantial manner by him. The changes are revealed during the course of a game and over a season. As an example, you won't hear him talking about how much Sam LaPorta is coming on in practice, we just see it manifested in the games to the point where they can rely on him to catch a critical pass at the end of the Nebraska game. I think I understand the reasons for that and I'm fine with it. Others are not, which I have no problem with either.

Kirk is fine as long as he isn't challenged or pressed.

With proper adoration and the freedom to do as he pleases, he is pleasant.

This catches a large percentage of people.

People who can deal with supervision, (willingly) failure, (ownership without blame) and success, (with humbleness) etc. in equal ways are not that common.

By nature he is reticent and guarded.

I like Dan Patrick and his crew too, most of the time.

Good interview, Kirk did some dancing though. Dan asked the question that I had, who makes the decision? Kirk said the governor, the U of I president, and the conference. I thought he may have let it slip that two conference teams may not play (Maryland and Rutgers? Northwestern?). Again, good interview.

I enjoyed that as well. KF comes off as a likable guy. I would love for him to just sit with a reporter and do a live interview for a couple hours, just sharing stories. I bet that would make for a fantastic time.

Dan Patrick is the best out there.

Dan Patrick got on his good side with all the "way back" references. Then, he snuck the Cleveland question in. I thought the interview might turn sour at that point. Does anybody really still care about what might have been with the Cleveland job?

Come on now, listen to Kirk talk for 2 hours?!?? He is so vanilla, I'd be asleep within 30-45 minutes.

Frankly, I'm a little surprised that he didn't have Jamie Pollard on (or at least make reference to him). The article yesterday in the DM Register based on his interview was really interesting. Pollard actually verbalized a few things that I've not heard any other coach or AD say. For instance, he acknowledged that they may consider admitting fans based on donor level. He even put a dollar value on letting the people in the suites attend.

I doubt that Dan Patrick even knows who Jamie Pollard is or that Dan follows or cares about anything relate to ISU athletics
