Good thought. Am older than you.Still Jones is answer. Reece and Phil will get it right.Great D-line creates Options. Isu will be Tough! New look super. But Pressure QB number#1 and rest easier.Jones first.Gameday jitters.Go Hawks....It was sometime in the first half after Jones was pulled. Chuck Long mentioned it during the broadcast. But then again I can see if he could of mistakened Hesse’ no. for Hockaday’s. Maybe I too fell victim to his suggestion, since Im over 60 and cant see as well as I used to. But when he said that, it sure looked like it at the time. I’ll have to rewatch the game again, I have it recorded. But even if he didnt, it still is a intriguing idea. Lol!
I saw that play. I was glad to see the raider package again. I like the fact that PP is willing to try some new looks. Seems like the older PP gets, the more aggressively the packages are getting. Kudos to coach Parker!
Hesse could be the MVP of the defensive line and I am not sure why he doesn't get more love. The leverage he plays with is awesome and he is very versatile with a good motor. I know everyone wants to get AJ into the game more but at this point he isn't at the same level for both the pass and the run as Hesse. Maybe that will change as the year goes on but regardless we are fortunate to be even having the conversation and we are in a good situation to have both.
Amen hallelujah.. When I hear AJ isn't an every down ready player yet I want to cringe. He very much is but Iowa's got 2 studs a few years older than him keeping the seat warm. Having that depth at that position is such a huge deal for us for so many reasons. The fact AJ as good as he is will be at 100% for every single snap he's out there should scare the living daylights out of who we play. How many snaps or percentage of them did he play? 30-35% or so of them spread out all game long I'm guessing.Chuck Long is confused. I certainly didn't see Hesse at middle linebacker. Long is confused about a lot of things too. I'm not sure if he's just trying to be objective or not a Hawkeye homer or what, but he says some dumbass stuff. On the interference play on B. Smith, the DB literally wrapped him up before the ball got there and impeded his progress to the ball and Chuck is saying that looked like pretty good defense. What?
They should have called out a couple of those holds are pretty cheap too...especially Fants since the play was ten yards down field and it was a matter of the defender whipping Fant down...the block was made and it was the end of the play.
Oh...and Chuck, AJE could start for most teams, but it's because Hesse is a senior and is a very good player. It's not that AJE isn't an every down player right now because he is. I love the respect this staff gives Hesse, and also the respect that AJ gives Hesse. It's earned...but don't say AJ isn't ready to be an every down player. He is and Hesse has earned the right to start based on what he's done and how good he is. AJ will get his snaps...and they have Hesse dropping to DT on passing downs to give AJ more reps.

This D won't have the problem the Adrian Clayborn lead lines did. This group won't wear down in the 2nd halfs/4th quarters of games. This group will have the effect they had on NIUs Oline in the 2nd half and wear them down. NIU was toast at the end of the game. Being able to go 6-8 deep on the line the rest of the way should be so so huge for us I can't wait to see it. If our running game can play keep away from the other team limiting possessions look out... We have the recipe but can we execute it?

Maybe a 4-4-3 in passing situations with Db? Hooker sounds great but so valuable where he is? Need pass rush to "change tempo" All this is a doable. Isu will show up on 'time' Like super ready!4-4-3 maybe not.Great to have Quality depth on D-line for Options.Coachs waay smart.Hofers seem to have that Trait.GoHawks..Saw Parker Hesse played some at the MLB spot vs. NIU. It brings up an interesting possibility especially if MLB position isnt as settled as earlier thought. What makes this interesting is that this would free up AJ Epenesa to start at DE since it looks like when our DT’s return, that would free up Brincks and Gohlston to backup DE spots. Gohlston played well against NIU and could be coming on. Lattimore, Reiff and Linderbaum in DT rotation. Would anyone be able to run up the middle on us? Niemann and Welch looked solid at the OLB spots. How bout this as a lineup?
DE A.Nelson.
Gohlston
DT M. Nelson
Linderbaum
DT Lattimore
Reiff
DE Epenesa or
Brincks
OLB Welch
Colbert
MLB Hesse
A.Jones or Hockaday
OLB Niemann
Wade
Hesse is athletic enough to play inside tackle to tackle. Tall enough to knock down passes over the middle. Can you imagine a rb trying to run a lead block thru him?
Agree.Agree.Will let our 2 HOF handle things. Now old FAN here.Isu great match-up.Need WIN. Hawk Players will get job done...Go Hawks! The only reason to scoff at the idea is if it's to much to grasp in a couple of weeks time.
Even then, it might be worth while to consider a few times/packages, where he only has to learn a little.
I think Jones is going to be able to wrap up and meet people in the hole as well, so I'm not saying he can't. I think even being older, he hasn't started a lot and maybe needs to remember what he said about trusting his teammates. Don't try to over think things. Slow the game down.
