Hedging

In this basic diagram of Fran's Fantastic half court defense, we see the Iowa defender (2) clearly out of position as the much faster guard (1) simply drives right by him for an easy lay-up. Also, notice the lack of help defenders in the lane to pick up the slicing and dicing opposing guard.

Two parts of FM's system that I've always disliked.
#1 Bigs hedging outside the lane
#2 End of clock situations where PG basically dribbles the clock down then goes one on one.

Just stop doing it. The team is too slow and always out of place defensively. It is only going to get worse once conference season starts when facing better talent and more athletic players.

So,. there are 5 ways to defend the ball screen (See link to make it easier to follow).

1) Hard Hedge
2) Soft Hedge
3) Switch
4) Blitz/Double Team
5) Ice/Down

Which one do you want them to switch to? What best uses Iowa's players' ability? I would love the team to be able to switch, but don't think they can pull it off like other teams can. Or, just play zone. :)

Use the length and go zone. You guys say how terrible the defense is when they play man to man. Sounds like a win/win to me.

I coach my boys 5th grade youth team. Many times in youth b-ball you play teams that just have that one ball handler that attempts to drive down the lane every possession.

I taught our players to hedge with our two wings (depending on the side) to help the defender on the point. This to make him pick up the dribble and to get the ball out of his hands. I don't run a BIG up there though. I use the wing who can quickly get back to defend his guy.
