This one has very few views compared to some others out there, so I'm guessing it was posted fairly late (didn't check)...anyway, highlights with insights of the Orange Bowl.

I hope Hawk fans never forget just how great Banks, Shaw and Betts were...I can only imagine what kind of numbers Ladell would've put up had he just been born a couple of years later.

Agree. Iowa has had some very special players. Leroy Smith is another guy that was darn good. One of the most intense and quickest DEs in the game. The knee injury destroyed any shot at the NFL.

He and Larry Station will always be my biggest "what if" guys...both were a bit undersized, but if they hadn't been injured I think both could've stuck in the pros. Chuck long and his elbow problems would be a close 2nd.

Edit: Shaw would be 3rd on my list, I think he would've stuck but never seemed to be the same after suffering a concussion in a pre-season game his rookie season.

Larry Station still looks like he could play ball! Vernon Rollins is another guy that injuries got the best of.

I thought Nick Bell was going to be an All-Pro. Didn't quite pan out.

Leroy Smith was one of the greatest to ever wear a Hawkeye uniform. Some of the plays that guy made were absolutely jaw dropping. I think his future in the NFL would have been at LB if he had stayed healty.

Bell had opportunity to perform in the NFL, the knock on him was that he was often injured. I remember his toughness and willingness to play with a little pain questioned while at Oakland.

Agree. He was so much fun to watch. I remember the Illinois game in 1990 when he was running dragging a couple guys with him. It was hilarious... He was a great Hawkeye. Thought/hoped he would do better in the pros.
