DECEMBER 29TH, 1996 - THE ALAMO BOWL: IOWA 27, Texas Tech 0. Probably the best overall bowl we played, and part of a two-year stretch where Hayden's teams finally showed consistent dominance in bowl games. Unfortunately, this was another black helmet game as the Hawkeye family suffered a tragedy with the mother of linebacker Mark Mitchell killed in a car accident on an icy road on the way to the game.
Once the game started, Iowa had to deal with Doak Walker award winner Byron Hanspard, who AVERAGED over 200 yards rushing per game, and their QB, Zebby Lethridge. But the Hawkeye defense, led by defensive game MVP Jared DeVries, held Hanspard to just 64 yards while sacking Lethridge five times and keeping his passing percentage under 50% for the only time that season.
Meanwhile, Sedrick Shaw rushed for 113 yards to earn offensive MVP honors. And even though Matt Sherman only completed nine passes the whole game, Tim Dwight caught six of those for 105 receiving yards. Not only was it the only bowl shut-out in the Hayden era, but few other games even came close.
