Kinnick Stadium 1970's and present .....
Unbelievable that it was full back in the day. I know I'm a stick in the mud... but I liked old Kinnick better.

it's weird seeing the old practice field next to the Rec Bldg, the tennis courts and that big grass lot next to the hospital (didn't the Iowa marching bands of past use the grass field next to the hospital as that area for practice?Couldn’t imagine the tailgating scene today with those grass lots still around kinnick

It looks bigger today, but it holds fewer people. It's still one of the best in the country. We were lucky they nixed the idea of building a new concrete turd of a stadium when it was being discussed years ago.Kinnick Stadium 1970's and present .....

I recall they were talking about putting a new stadium out by IC West HS in the 80's and the UofI Hospital & Clinics wanted to tear Kinnick down and add the hospital there. It looks bigger today, but it holds fewer people. I saw that. I always thought it was around 70K once the end zone seats were in. I wonder when the first photo was taken. It had to have been no earlier than '79 because they didn't have the Tigerhawk before then. From '56 a '82 it only held 60,000.
I always compared it to the putting surface of a miniature golf course. Complete with the burns and abrasions. That AstroTurf was like playing on your basement concrete floor. How awful.

Anyone know if the UNIDome is still artificial turf? Or is it field turf.
It was a long time agoGreat video. It seems like a long time ago now.
The narrator was Gene Claussen, I believe.
Always good to get a piece on your birthday!
This is a piece of the original Astro Turf in Kinnick....hangs right above my basement computer station.
My folks were friends with the Krauses's in Hampton (the Kum and Go Krause family).
Bill got a piece of this, gave it to my dad and my mom framed it for me for one of my birthdays.
