IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Granddaddy of Them All has come a calling. Former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry is one of three individuals that will be inducted into the 2010 Rose Bowl Hall of Fame class Dec. 30 in Pasadena, Calif.
"This is a great honor and a great tribute to all the coaches and players that were a part of my program," said Fry, who closed his Hawkeye coaching career as the winningest coach in school history (143-89-6). "It is also a great honor to represent the Big Ten Conference."
BEEF BOWL MAGIC?
The only time legendary Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes allowed his Buckeyes to participate in Lawry’s Beef Bowl was in 1957, a few days prior to the Buckeyes’ 10-7 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the 1958 Rose Bowl Game. Woody’s Rose Bowl Game record for the other six Lawry’s Beef Bowls his teams missed? 2 wins, 4 losses. Iowa’s Hayden Fry is the only other coach who did not allow his players to participate in Lawry’s Beef Bowl out of concern it would distract his team before The Granddaddy of Them All®. The Hawkeyes were drubbed in both the 1982 and 1986 Rose Bowl Games. Fry decided to allow his team to participate in Lawry’s Beef Bowl prior to their 1991 Rose Bowl Game with Washington. Iowa didn’t prevail, but they turned the clash into a 46-34 barnburner.
