Hawks ran well to start 2nd half against OSU - went away from it again

This thread should be about Phil Parker, not the offense.
Yes, Iowa's D was the problem in the second half... Too bad there's a game manager's offensive game plan and QB. If Iowa is 2 or more scores behind, you can forget about Iowa's chances... They can't catch up... especially with a good dose of running.

False.

Iowa was down 10-0 this year to NIU and caught up and actually led most of the game. I can think of several games in the past few years where Iowa was down 2 scores and caught up to tie or take the lead.

2008 against PSU the Hawks were down 23-14 and came back to win 24-23.

2009 @PSU the Hawks were down 10-0 and came back to win 21-10.

2009 @ Wisky the Hawks were down 10-0 and came back to win 20-10.

2009 @OSU the Hawks were down 24-10 and tied it at 24 before losing in OT.

2010 @Arizona the Hawks were down 14-0 and even 27-7 at one point and tied it at 27 before losing 34-27.

Maybe I'm just forgetting something, but the holding penalty on the second possession of the second half came exactly 1 play before Duzey's touchdown.

You're absolutely right, Tork. But had we not had that holding call, we could've run the ball moar! That's what this thread is about. Ermuhgawd!

No, I seem to be losing it, and can't seem to read a damn play-by-play without losing my place. My Bad. That second drive was awful damn short though. Too bad the offense can't stay on the field and give the defense a break <:-l

There were two main reasons Iowa lost to OSU: Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde. And the score could have been more lopsided if their 1st team All American DB doesn't get himself ejected early in the game.

It's about the Johnnies and Joes, not the Xs and Os as a 3-time National Championship winning coach once said. Do any of you think you know more about college football than a 3-time National Champ coach? I know I don't.

The "We should have run it on that 3rd and 3! We are a running team! It's our strength!" 'analysis' is just the mirror image of "We should have passed on that 3rd and 3! The defense had to be expecting the run! Why do what the defense expects in that situation?!?". It's all a just bunch of mental masturbation. A never ending circular argument that gives a small rush of adrenaline while you're doing it but is ultimately pointless. It feels good while you're doing it, but in the end is completely devoid of any true meaning.

So wank on.

Didn't realize you guys would display a litany of Iowa games for a litany of Iowa seasons. I meant (should have been more clear, I guess) about this season. With Iowa's current personnel that helps to cause Iowa's defensive lapses and Iowa's offensive offensive potential.... Just thought it ridiculous that someone was calling for Iowa's patented running attack in the second half of the tOSU game after tOSU opened up the offensive flood gates..

If you guys haven't figured me out by now, I'm for Iowa wins. Not Iowa ideology. I couldn't care less if Iowa wins 5-3, as long as Iowa wins. Sticking with an offensive ideology that doesn't produce a win shouldn't be good in anybody's book. Why is it so to some on this board (and, IMO, the head coach)?

Not to beat a dead horse or even and injured one but IIRC Weisman opened the 2nd half for Iowa's offense with a tough 12 yard run, then got about 4-5 yards. He came out and Bullock had a hard hitting run for about 7-8 for another first down almost out to mid field.

Bullock ran for maybe a yard and then we threw the ball. And in a few other possessions in the 2nd half we didnt try to run much.

This got us into trouble against NIU.

I just think running the ball to set up the pass is this team's design and expertise.

That's all, go hawks, looking forward now to the NW game and I hope the hawks are on fire, making good decisions, good reads and instinct moves, tackle great and win. I hope when the hawks need or want to pass they give Jake better routes than some of the back shoulder stuff he had in the 2nd half against OSU.

I think they ran fine through out the game... but OSU forced bad plays on certain 1st downs.

This is a misrepresentation of what happened. OSU dominating the ball is the biggest story.

First 3rd quarter possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 Mark Weisman rush for 12 yards to the Iowa 37 for a 1ST down. 17 17
1st and 10 at IOWA 37 Mark Weisman rush for 4 yards to the Iowa 41.
2nd and 6 at IOWA 41 Damon Bullock rush for 7 yards to the Iowa 48 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 48 Damon Bullock rush for 1 yard to the Iowa 49.
2nd and 9 at IOWA 49 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Tevaun Smith.
3rd and 9 at IOWA 49 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Damond Powell.

I can't fault any pass that happened.

Next possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 IOWA penalty 10 yard Holding on Austin Blythe accepted. 17 24
1st and 20 at IOWA 15 Jake Rudock pass complete to Jake Duzey for 85 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.

Um, can't fault that one.

3rd possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 19 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Jake Duzey. 24 31
2nd and 10 at IOWA 19 Jake Rudock pass complete to Jake Duzey for 22 yards to the Iowa 41 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 41 LeShun Daniels rush for a loss of 1 yard to the Iowa 40.
2nd and 11 at IOWA 40 Jake Rudock pass complete to Don Shumpert for 5 yards to the Iowa 45.
3rd and 6 at IOWA 45 Jake Rudock pass incomplete.

Can't fault any pass there.

Then Iowa gets the ball with 5:50 left in the game, down 10 points.

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 Jake Rudock pass incomplete. 24 34
2nd and 10 at IOWA 25 Damon Bullock rush for 6 yards to the Iowa 31.
3rd and 4 at IOWA 31 Jake Rudock pass complete to Tevaun Smith for 6 yards to the Iowa 37 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 37 Jake Rudock pass incomplete.
2nd and 10 at IOWA 37 Jake Rudock pass complete to Don Shumpert for 6 yards to the Iowa 43.
3rd and 4 at IOWA 43 Jake Rudock pass intercepted by Tyvis Powell at the OhSt 49, returned for no gain to the OhSt 49.

That is every single possession of the second half. What plays that were passes would you think it made much more sense to run?

My take is that on 1st down, the Hawks got "off schedule" and that affected them

MOAR DERP.

The very first game I mentioned was when Iowa came back from a 10-0 hole against NIU this year to lead for a good chunk of the game.

10-0 is 2 scores, Homer.

We were also down 10-0 against MSU before taking a 14-10 lead into the half.

Positive 1st down yardage is very important to this Hawk team for them to continue to run the offense they want to run (i guess that's true for every team, but especially important for the Hawks). Those first few drives were...well...heart warming.
