Hawks ran well to start 2nd half against OSU - went away from it again

Not to beat a dead horse or even and injured one but IIRC Weisman opened the 2nd half for Iowa's offense with a tough 12 yard run, then got about 4-5 yards. He came out and Bullock had a hard hitting run for about 7-8 for another first down almost out to mid field.

Bullock ran for maybe a yard and then we threw the ball. And in a few other possessions in the 2nd half we didnt try to run much.

This got us into trouble against NIU.

I just think running the ball to set up the pass is this team's design and expertise.

That's all, go hawks, looking forward now to the NW game and I hope the hawks are on fire, making good decisions, good reads and instinct moves, tackle great and win. I hope when the hawks need or want to pass they give Jake better routes than some of the back shoulder stuff he had in the 2nd half against OSU.

This is a misrepresentation of what happened. OSU dominating the ball is the biggest story.

First 3rd quarter possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 Mark Weisman rush for 12 yards to the Iowa 37 for a 1ST down. 17 17
1st and 10 at IOWA 37 Mark Weisman rush for 4 yards to the Iowa 41.
2nd and 6 at IOWA 41 Damon Bullock rush for 7 yards to the Iowa 48 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 48 Damon Bullock rush for 1 yard to the Iowa 49.
2nd and 9 at IOWA 49 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Tevaun Smith.
3rd and 9 at IOWA 49 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Damond Powell.

I can't fault any pass that happened.

Next possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 IOWA penalty 10 yard Holding on Austin Blythe accepted. 17 24
1st and 20 at IOWA 15 Jake Rudock pass complete to Jake Duzey for 85 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.

Um, can't fault that one.

3rd possession:

1st and 10 at IOWA 19 Jake Rudock pass incomplete to Jake Duzey. 24 31
2nd and 10 at IOWA 19 Jake Rudock pass complete to Jake Duzey for 22 yards to the Iowa 41 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 41 LeShun Daniels rush for a loss of 1 yard to the Iowa 40.
2nd and 11 at IOWA 40 Jake Rudock pass complete to Don Shumpert for 5 yards to the Iowa 45.
3rd and 6 at IOWA 45 Jake Rudock pass incomplete.

Can't fault any pass there.

Then Iowa gets the ball with 5:50 left in the game, down 10 points.

1st and 10 at IOWA 25 Jake Rudock pass incomplete. 24 34
2nd and 10 at IOWA 25 Damon Bullock rush for 6 yards to the Iowa 31.
3rd and 4 at IOWA 31 Jake Rudock pass complete to Tevaun Smith for 6 yards to the Iowa 37 for a 1ST down.
1st and 10 at IOWA 37 Jake Rudock pass incomplete.
2nd and 10 at IOWA 37 Jake Rudock pass complete to Don Shumpert for 6 yards to the Iowa 43.
3rd and 4 at IOWA 43 Jake Rudock pass intercepted by Tyvis Powell at the OhSt 49, returned for no gain to the OhSt 49.

That is every single possession of the second half. What plays that were passes would you think it made much more sense to run?

Thank you. I swear we have blind fans. If one was to get picky, maybe our last first down. Ahead of the chains the Hawks did what they wanted.

In a weird way the fantastic 85 yd 1 1/2 play drive hurt. The D really needed a breather...that and the subsequent hold on Lowery's pick

Yep, beating a team like OSU is a team effort. First half the offense played at a near-perfect level, which is probably unsustainable for a whole game against a team with superior talent. The offense's performance in the first half overshadowed Iowa's inability to stop OSU's offense. Second half, the inability to stop OSU continued and the Iowa offense couldn't convert 7 of 8 third downs like it did in the first half. That was the game.

I didn't like this pass, although it was a passing down based on the poor 2nd down pass. Powell was 4 yards short of the first down marker, with no hope of getting the first down, even if he had caught it. It reminded me of last year's pass plays. He did have CJF open over the middle about 15-17 yards downfield, but missed him. Debatable whether they should have passed on 2nd down, but can't fault them for trying a pass there. Although agree that it was OSU domination on offense that was the big difference maker in the second half.

Another thing that I see as a disconnect in the complaints about playcalling is audibling. We audible on seemingly over 50% of the plays, so the play ran is frequently much different than what came in from the sideline.

Pound the ball on the bolded lines. However, the one with the * ball was thrown short of the marker......have to throw past marker line.

Thank you for this. I tried explaining things in a different thread and the arm chair QB'S/coaches seem to know so much more.

I give credit to the coaches on the game plan and to GD on the play calls. It was a terrific plan/game. If the defense makes a stop (on any of OSU's scoring drives in the 2nd half) perhaps this is a different thread today.

Your recommendations border on making us predictable, which is the other complaint of fans.

2nd and 9, after four straight runs, is a running situation?

Eddie Podolak suggested that the interception was a case of Powell not breaking inside, where the pass went, and turning outside instead.....this is the problem with Powell...he still is trying to learn the patterns...not sure if this is true or not, but if so, that pick was not on Jake. The way we were passing, I have no big issue with playcalling...the mix was pretty good all day between run and pass and that was the only way we could keep our defense off the field. The OSU offense is a spectacular group of talent...one of the best in years in the Big Ten.

So your insight is we should've run the ball on all the incomplete throws. That's deep analysis, man. GD shouldn't have called an interception passing play too. Prolly should've just ran it there too.

Could have simply been an option route, where Powell cuts based on the leverage of the defender (he inside, I outside; he outside, I inside) and maybe the read was murky for both and unfortunately they went in opposite directions. I don't remember the exact schematics of the play, but it's a possible explanation if Powell had come to a stop and then made a break...

How about the two in the bold. The first possession we were running great. A good run on 2nd and 9 might get the hawks into 3rd and short. That one pass for starters

The game plan and calls were fine on the o. Execute and it is different game.
On the d, winded or not, you gotta get a stop.
We were close. I would even say a play or call away. Coaches did good and players did good.
Lets move on to the cats.

Thanks for listing out all of those plays. I also thought we abandoned the run, but it seems apparent there wasn't much more we could do. The only offensive play I would have liked to see was a pass over the top, preferably to Powell.

I have been hard on GD, but he called a good game. This loss was on the defense.

Try again and read. I did not say that. I did not say on all of the incomplete throws. Try again.

Ohio State held the ball for much of the half and were unstoppable meaning that Iowa's few offensive possessions needed to be perfect if they were going to win. If you run the ball, you set up the possibility of long conversion attempts which ends your drive. Our offense just isn't good enough to score on every possession like they needed to in that second half.

What I'm saying is, the defense ****ed that game up.
