Hawks Nest not a draw at Carver

Yeah, Hawk's nest was empty. But so was the rest of CHA. That game was an 7:30 PM start, I think. That doesn't help any.

The university needs to do a much better job of enhancing the Hawk's Nest experience, from ticket prices to seating, meet-ups, give-aways, communications with coaches and players. One often gets the sense Iowa's marketing folks are stuck in the 1980s. Simply putting a product on the floor isn't enough; ya gotta sell it.

How much do student tickets cost?

I don't understand why they don't look into free admission for the first 1000 students. After that charge like $7.00 for a student to get into the game. Maybe set aside like 1500 student seats. After that students can still get in but they have to pay full ticket price.

The students are a pretty good indication of where the program is at. It still seems like the students would rather do something else than attend Iowa's games consistently. Maybe take away the cost excuse and see if that increases student attendance. I think getting as many students there is key to a good environment. I guess at this point students would rather watch the game at home with the ability to watch other games as well.

I have been out of college for 11 years so I don't know what student mentality is right now. I don't know if there are just other things to do.

If it's not on their Wii box or their iPhone, it doesn't exist...

I can not say this enough, MAKE.IT.FREE. They make it impossible to be impulsive and go to a game with the way they put all tickets on ID cards this year.

I don't understand why we have the isles running all the way down to the floor. On TV it looks like there is as much empty isle space as there is seating in the bottom 10 rows. Other arenas appear to be bleach seating-packed around the floor...

They should charge a student activity fee in the tuition cost which would cover attending any and/or all Iowa on campus sporting events. Them make it fist come, first served as far as seating at any on campus sporting event. It would spread the cost over the entire student body and essentially make it close to being free for any students attending a sporting event. Cost would no longer be an excuse for not showing up. Then move on to marketing the product better.

I've suggested that many times while discussing how they could get more people to the game with my buddies. I love the student section, I just wish more of the ILhawks cared more

the location of the student section is terrible. Look at nearly every great student section in college bball. All are along the side of the court.

I like that idea.

The current method is set up that way, just they charge for Football and Men's basketball. Everything else is free to students, even wrestling

The seating layout of Carver doesn't allow them to fully optimize a student section.

Season tickets come to $5 a game, $90 total.

Single game are usually $10 for students

All good ideas. I agree with the notion of including some athletics charge in the student activity fee to cover the cost of attending major athletic event (mainly football and men's basketball) and then letting students get in free, but there may be an issue of requiring all students to pay for something that only a fraction of them benefit from. (This was an issue 35 years ago with a student activity fee subsidy of the Daily Iowan.)

CHA, unfortunately, was designed for fat-azz farmers/donors and not a vocal student body. It didn't need to be at the time it was built; years ago, believe it or not, a ticket to men's hoops at CHA was hard to get. I don't know whether a redesign would allow closing off aisles near the floor or putting in bleacher seating behind the benches and in view of the TV cameras for students. I'm not sure Barry Garta would even be interested in exploring that. But the fact is students are not packed in close to the floor; you get little sense from TV that there's even a student body attending other than shouts of "Byrd, you suck!" amid screeches of players' shoes on the hardwood and the occasional shot of the kid wearing the farmer outfit or the teletubbies.

Those would be huge steps forward. But the university also needs to be aggressive in encouraging that sort of effort through marketing, organization, tschotckes, meeting with coaches and players. People in the Hawks Nest need to feel like they are a part of something special, something that gives them a benefit that non-members don't get. Even if it's getting the chance to walk through a special Hawks Nest/boosters ticket entrance with a gold rug at CHA.

The seating for students is horrible. It's based on a corner of the court and goes all the way up in 1 or 2 sections. They need to either make it directly behind the baskets on both sides or along a side like Michigan does.

Oh heck no, we got to have all the old fart donors sitting in those seats. That way they can tell you to sit down and then leave with 5 minutes left to go in the games.

I will never forget attending Senior Day a few years ago, we were playing Illinois and I got a little vocal with the fans that were swarming up the steps and leaving with the game still in doubt and the Seniors getting recognized. It was embarrassing as I was sitting near Illinois fans who most stayed and acknowledged our Seniors even though they lost.

Seating needs to get changed, the people that want to sit on their hands and clap need to sit further up the arena. I would love to see the students get seats behind the benches.
