Hawks Land TOP Ranked Baseball Recruiting Class in Big 10

Our new baseball coach has been in Iowa City for just two years. He inherited a perennial doormat who had not reached post season play in 25 years. He coaches in a low population, freezing cold state, and is paid less than most of his peers. Despite the disadvantages, he somehow managed to land the #1 recruiting class in the Big 10 conference this past winter, BEFORE his team made a huge run this year and landed in the top 15 in the country!

How is our baseball coach able to come in and recruit like crazy with very little support, yet fat cat Ferentz has all the advantages...tradition, funding, HUGE salary, facilities, and only has the energy to land the 12th best recruiting class in the conference for the past two years and is likely to do the same again this year. The answer...energy/charisma/salesmenship. Sadly, when a coach with a $4.5 mill annual salary who has been in his position for 17 years simply loses all of those traits.

Pretty impressive by baseball coach.

FB recruited should be better. Maybe the new FB coach will improve recruiting a little. Probably gonna have to wait a few more years to find out though. "Fingers crossed".

FWIW....some of those kids could be drafted and not make it to campus. Plus the state of Iowa has baseball talent; but I digress, this board could use another shot at Kurt....and that's coming from someone who despises him

I am convinced that iowalaw is actually a plant by the koolaid-drinkers to make people who criticize KF look bad by association.

why stop at Ferentz? why not include McCaffery, Bluder, and every other Iowa coach in your analogy

A clear case of apples and oranges here-but don't let that get in your way in hating Kirk.

Wrestling has recruited at a high level with a lower budget than the vball team. Bluder has landed 3 or 4 top 100 players over the past couple of years and coming off a sweet 16. Fran has had good results in a ridiculous era of B1G bball.

Agreed. The fools that call this an apples to oranges comparison have no idea what they are talking about. Benddontbreak is correct. None of our major programs have had the same recruiting struggles as Ferentz and son. None have been handed such shiny, expensive facilities in which to recruit. Our women's basketball program continues to haul in top 3 recruiting classes in the Big 10. The wrestling program, like baseball, is killing it at recruiting. Fran's out of state recruiting still leaves much to be desired, but he still gets after it and his effort is unquestioned. Every AAU player who gives an interview says that they have seen Fran at their games and appreciate his effort. While Iowa basketball doesn't have the tradition over the past 15 years that football has, which gives Fran a major disadvantage, his recruiting classes are not in the cellar of the conference like Kirk's. Hell, even our swim team and golf teams have had more success recruiting in recent years...and they don't rely on landing 50% of their roster from Iowa.

And you dont hear the excuses from these coaches either.

I think it would be difficult to do worse at this point.

One reason it's apples and oranges is that Iowa baseball doesn't have to compete in recruiting with baseball behemoths in the midwest like football does. The B1G in baseball hasn't been very good for years while B1G football, while not great either, is at least in the conversation as one of the top conferences. Shoot, even ISU has taken the highest rated players in the state the past couple of years in football, while ISU doesn't even have a baseball team.

Apples and oranges applies. They are both fruits but they taste differently and you use them in different ways.

The difference is black and white.

Baseball is white players.

Football is black players at all skill positions and defense.

Black population in Iowa is 2% of a small population state.

I love Kirk Ferentz. Always and forever. Such a great man. Haters gonna hate
