Hawks Finish Strong, Beat Indiana State: Marble's Best Game of the Year?

The Iowa Hawkeyes might have felt as if they belonged in the NCAA tournament this year and witnessed their bubble burst on Sunday. Perhaps that was the reason for Iowa's slow start, but they led by one at the half and while they started slow in the second half, Zach McCabe scored eight straight and the Hawkeyes would win 68-52.

Former Iowa Assistant and Harlan, Iowa native Greg Lansing returned to Carver Hawkeye, this time as the Sycamores head coach and his team jumped out to an early lead on back to back treys to open the game but both teams offenses ground to a halt. Iowa would regroup and hit 7 of 10 shots to end the half including alley oops from Devyn Marble to Gabe Olaseni and Aaron White and Iowa led 31-30.

In the second half, the Hawkeyes would hit a few threes and Devyn Marble was very active on the defensive end as he put together his best all around game of the season.

He led Iowa in scoring with 24 points, led with six assists, led with four steals and had five rebounds and just one assist on 7-15 shooting plus 8-10 from the line. The 24 points was the third highest total on the year for Marble, the six assits his second best total and the four steals was a season high.

Aaron White scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebound while Melsahn Basabe scored 9 points and had eight rebounds in 19 minutes. Olaseni was active again on the defensive end, blocking two shots in 12 minutes. He has 36 blocks in 344 minutes of action this year, or 10.42 minutes per game. If he can move those minutes up a bit next year to say 18, he may get close to 70 blocked shots.

Iowa was 22-57 from the floor, or just over 38% while Indiana State was 19-50, or 38% exactly. Iowa enjoyed a 42-27 advantage on the glass but Indiana State was not sending anybody to the offensive glass as they were determined not to let Iowa beat them in transition. That helped Iowa to a 17-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

Neither team featured many seniors and both will be very competitive in their leagues next season, especially with Creighton leaving the Valley. Iowa and Indiana State could meet again in November as both teams are in the Great Alaskan Shootout.

Iowa received a favor from Stony Brook, the 7th seed in Iowa's bracket, when they beat 2nd seeded Massachusetts on Wednesday night. That means Iowa gets to host a second NIT game and will do so Friday at 8:30p, a game that will be televised on ESPNU. Below are details related to that game and purchasing tickets. Can Iowa sellout again on Friday the way they did for this game?

Stony Brook is ranked 22 spots higher than UMass and about 40 spots higher than ISU in KenPom, Hawks are going to need to play better on Friday to get the win.

Glad to see a full house supporting the Hawks in Carver tonight. Pretty impressive for an NIT game.

I hear that in order to try to get another full house on Friday night that the Sports PR staff is going to bring back Chris Kingsbury to wrestle a grizzly bear at halftime and everyone will get free corn dogs if the Hawks score more than 50 points - Go Hawks!

RPI has Stony Brook ahead of Iowa and Indiana St ahead of both. Of course, RPI also has Detroit ahead of us, and they're being embarrassed by AZ State. Goes to show how bad the RPI is.

Iowa is 43 in the BPI, Stony Brook is 80. Massey has Iowa 46, Stony Brook 74. Also, you say they are 40 spots higher in KenPom, which puts them in the 60's and Iowa at 27.

???

Did you know that Iowa is rank 27th and that is 34 spots higher than SB in the KenPom. Let's also not forget that SB is visiting Carver on Friday Night. Just curious hawkfan33, does that account for anything.

Marble saved Iowa from a bad loss tonight, no question. The team was flat, guys looked disinterested and Marble took over on both ends to inject some life into the crowd. No idea why this team lays eggs in important games, but is a disturbing trend. The first 15 minutes of the first half was easily the worst half of basketball I have seen all season.

Your basketball posts suggest you either don't watch much basketball or just don't understand it.

Please opine Windsor, as actually you are wrong on both counts. I find posts like yours void of content. "Clearly you don't know what you are talking about". But no supporting case to make. With 12 minutes gone in the first half, Iowa had 11 points. Tell me what I don't understand about basketball. I just read McCaffrey's transcript and he said Marble stepped up and made big plays that really turned the game around. Again, tell me what I am missing. I am sure if I dug deep enough, I could find posts from you talking about Cougill's soft hands and passing skills,
