The Iowa Hawkeyes might have felt as if they belonged in the NCAA tournament this year and witnessed their bubble burst on Sunday. Perhaps that was the reason for Iowa's slow start, but they led by one at the half and while they started slow in the second half, Zach McCabe scored eight straight and the Hawkeyes would win 68-52.
Former Iowa Assistant and Harlan, Iowa native Greg Lansing returned to Carver Hawkeye, this time as the Sycamores head coach and his team jumped out to an early lead on back to back treys to open the game but both teams offenses ground to a halt. Iowa would regroup and hit 7 of 10 shots to end the half including alley oops from Devyn Marble to Gabe Olaseni and Aaron White and Iowa led 31-30.
In the second half, the Hawkeyes would hit a few threes and Devyn Marble was very active on the defensive end as he put together his best all around game of the season.
He led Iowa in scoring with 24 points, led with six assists, led with four steals and had five rebounds and just one assist on 7-15 shooting plus 8-10 from the line. The 24 points was the third highest total on the year for Marble, the six assits his second best total and the four steals was a season high.
Aaron White scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebound while Melsahn Basabe scored 9 points and had eight rebounds in 19 minutes. Olaseni was active again on the defensive end, blocking two shots in 12 minutes. He has 36 blocks in 344 minutes of action this year, or 10.42 minutes per game. If he can move those minutes up a bit next year to say 18, he may get close to 70 blocked shots.
Iowa was 22-57 from the floor, or just over 38% while Indiana State was 19-50, or 38% exactly. Iowa enjoyed a 42-27 advantage on the glass but Indiana State was not sending anybody to the offensive glass as they were determined not to let Iowa beat them in transition. That helped Iowa to a 17-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
Neither team featured many seniors and both will be very competitive in their leagues next season, especially with Creighton leaving the Valley. Iowa and Indiana State could meet again in November as both teams are in the Great Alaskan Shootout.
Iowa received a favor from Stony Brook, the 7th seed in Iowa's bracket, when they beat 2nd seeded Massachusetts on Wednesday night.
